Disclaimer: this study has no intent to imply who is more or less European, since being European is in my opinion not an exclusive matter of genetics. I was simply curious to analyze with Davidski's G25 method in what percentage are Modern Europeans related with Ancient Europeans. The three core populations of Ancient Europe were the Western Hunter-Gatherers, Early European Farmers and the Western Steppe Herders. I will include every modern population living in the geographic territory of Europe for at least 500 years. The order will be established by which modern populations have Ancient European admixture in the highest amount and in case of similar percentage, order of priority will be most percentage: 1. WHG, 2. EEF, 3. WSH. I modified several of the population names from Davidski's calculator for better description. Some modern European populations didn't have broader averages, so in their cases I used all the regional averages available.

It's rather interesting to see that Northeast Europeans have preserved even more WHG ancestry than Northwestern Europeans, while Southern Europeans also have inherited plenty mainly ancient Asiatic admixture, but also some African. To me it was somewhat a surprise that many Italian and Greek regions do have a quarter or even 1/3 Ancient Asiatic ancestry.

The Caucasus is geographically in Asia though, also these types are most prevalent in other Asiatic populations. Asia is a very diverse place, from East Asian to Arab types.

The Armenians and Azeris are not even Caucasians properly speaking. Check out Chechens, Ingush, Avars, Dargins, Laks, Tabasarans, Kabardins, Adyghe, etc. I didn't mention the Turkic-speaking groups.

Yes, but they live north of the Caucasus area, in Southern Russia, which is geographically already Europe. They are also 2/3 Ancient Asian, only 1/3 Ancient European. Look at their results I posted. The Caucasus region is indeed very special, as it borders Europe and Asia, however only some Southern Europeans have Ancient Caucasus origin, while this type is very widespread in Western Asia.

Even though EEFs originated from Anatolia, but their movement to Europe already happened in the 7th millenium BCE, and this type is much more widespread and typical of modern European populations than in modern Western Asia, where later Bronze Age culture types from Caucasus and Iran and earlier Levant types became dominant.

It's rather interesting to see that Northeast Europeans have preserved even more WHG ancestry than Northwestern Europeans, while Southern Europeans also have inherited plenty mainly ancient Asiatic admixture, but also some African. To me it was somewhat a surprise that many Italian and Greek regions do have a quarter or even 1/3 Ancient Asiatic ancestry.

This is actually an artefact that is caused by them having a higher EHG proportion than what is in your Western Steppe Herders reference. So what will the calculator do with that EHG surplus proportion? The closest component provided by you is WHG so it will assign it there. Here is a calculator that distinguishes between (and provides both) WHG and EHG and where you can see that, especially the applicable (notably lower) WHG proportion.

Here's European populations plotted using your model. The convex hulls are based on using the scaled coordinates of the populations to perform hierarchical clustering and then cutting the clustering tree at the height where it has 10 subtrees. Each population is connected with a line to its three closest neighbors based on the Euclidean distance of the scaled coordinates.

Latvians have the highest combined WHG and WSH so they plot the highest on the Y-axis. Udmurts have the highest WSH (59.8%), but maybe it's because they have both more EHG and more CHG than Western Europeans, and there wasn't an EHG source in your model.

Nenetses, Kalmyks, and some North Caucasian populations have 0% WHG and 0% EEF, so their points are located on the line between the WSH component and other components.

I actually used Davidski's standard calculator when he gives G25 results to purchasers. I welcome any other type of ancient calculators with additional populations. Can you run a few modern populations on K11, since the reference looks promising?

It could be determined that these farmers are derived from local Hunter Gatherers in Anatolia (individual ZBC, Pinarbasi, 15 ky) without any notable contribution from Mesopotamia. Later Barcin individuals are then just somewhat different, but it's not about a Mesopotamian contribution.

Now, Barcin is extremely close to Europe and unfortunately it lacks contemporary finds from the part of Europe, that is closest to Barcin (Greece, Thrakia). It seems well possible that there was a population similar to Barcin. This implicates that it is possible, that also that expanding farmer population actually came from inside Europe. And this does not seem very unlikely.

Yep. Follows. I'm convinced that Davidski constructed his standard model that way only because that also was performed in academic papers to provide comparable results. But that calculators did just allow WHG or steppe with a fixated EHG proportion so it can produce these artefacts for WHG.

You are spot on ,there was a genetics lecture in Greece and it seems there are unpublished Mesolithic samples which they say do not differ from the Neolithic ones..remains to be seen.

It's not a PCA, but it's a square version of a ternary diagram.

The image below shows the 64 populations that are the closest to the Bashkir population average (I hate the decimal system but I like integer exponents of two). The components with the highest average percentage were WSH (35%), Han (23%), and EEF (8%), and the other components are combined into the "Other" component.

There isn't an ANE or WSHG component, so West Siberians get a lot of WSH. For example Khanty are modeled as 29% WSH, 34% Han, 13% Clovis, and 4% Levant_N.

Right. Confused WSH with WSHG which is Western Siberian Hunter Gatherer, who are a very different population from Western Steppe Herders; the former being a mix of mostly 50% ANE+ 30% EHG+ 20% East Asian ancestry.

Closest modern pops to WSHG seem to be Volga Ural tribes and Tlingit, an Amerindian tribe from North America:

It's not a PCA, but it's a square version of a ternary diagram.

The image below shows the 64 populations that are the closest to the Bashkir population average (I hate the decimal system but I like integer exponents of two). The components with the highest average percentage were WSH (35%), Han (23%), and EEF (8%), and the other components are combined into the "Other" component.

There isn't an ANE or WSHG component, so West Siberians get a lot of WSH. For example Khanty are modeled as 29% WSH, 34% Han, 13% Clovis, and 4% Levant_N.

Absolutely. But consider Yamnaya is roughly 50% EHG and kind of 0% WHG. What we do have from WHG is ridicolous and it does hardly anywhere exceed 10%.

A good question. I've never understood the meaning of the absolute values of the distances and I even think, there is no. My assumption is, they are just relative, i. e. for comparison within the same calculator, not between different calculators.

If they should be regarded absolute, then I can just speculate: Maybe a Yamnaya sample, that is younger (5 ky) and closer to today people than the other references has some more genetic traces, that are not cought by the components in the K11. I think Yamnaya can not be perfectly modeled by just EHG and CHG, as the K11 provides. There is probably also some Iran chalcolithic-like DNA in Yamnaya and I know that Davidski likes to use Iran chalcolitic for modelling, beside CHG or without CHG. But different experiments have shown, that CHG seems somewhat more suitable, if you just use one of these both components. If you just use Iran Chalcolitic and no CHG you get a part of CHG pushed into ENF (instead of all into Iran chalcolithic).

I'm not sure what to called it either. South Asians actually get a lot of ANE like around 30% if I remembered correctly from seeing Eurogenes K8 and Basal rich K7. Also Khanty have one of the highest ANE in Eurasia along with Ket, Selkup with their other side being East Asian ancestry (much more Krasnoyarsk/Nganasan-like than Shamanka-like which is more Tungusic/Turkic-related)

Yes and WHG is European component that is furthest removed from both mongoloids and sub-saharans. EHG even has Onge like affinities.

The main confusion with the fact some calculators will give Euros a lot of EHG and some other calculators give the opposite results with a lot of WHG, is this:

Most of the WHG people actually have today, comes from Pinarbasi, the Anatolian hunter (before they became farmers). Which himself has a clear ancestral relationship with the Iron Gates mesolithic hunters (from Balkan), and generally increased affinity with the WHG that were roaming around the Alps. Basically you have a North Eurasian cline between WHG and AG/ANE, and everything in between is an intermediate mix.

Let's not even begin with how ANE and Paleo WHG splitted from each others further back in time, somewhere after the main ENA events. The bottom line is strangely enough, both ideas that we are highly WHG and EHG can be correct. I would say in the big scheme of things we are still more WHG because when you actually triangulate Europe with only WHG, ANE and BE, we all come up with little ANE, significantly less than Amerindians or Indians for example. Which could sound strange because IE came last and we are supposed to have a lot of IE. The thing is, yes but they also mixed repeatidly with the farmers after their first expansion in Europe, so more farmers, more WHG... slowly replaced again the IE EHG, and in several waves of settlement, resettlement of Bell Beakers (like one of the recent study on BA Britain)

Yet a bit of ANE and a lot of WHG, can still be quantified as quite a good amount of EHG (or SHG), so it really depends what choices and references the calculator will use.

Yep. Follows. I'm convinced that Davidski constructed his standard model that way only because that also was performed in academic papers to provide comparable results. But that calculators did just allow WHG or steppe with a fixated EHG proportion so it can produce these artefacts for WHG.

Absolutely. But consider Yamnaya is roughly 50% EHG and kind of 0% WHG. What we do have from WHG is ridicolous and it does hardly anywhere exceed 10%.

A good question. I've never understood the meaning of the absolute values of the distances and I even think, there is no. My assumption is, they are just relative, i. e. for comparison within the same calculator, not between different calculators.

If they should be regarded absolute, then I can just speculate: Maybe a Yamnaya sample, that is younger (5 ky) and closer to today people than the other references has some more genetic traces, that are not cought by the components in the K11. I think Yamnaya can not be perfectly modeled by just EHG and CHG, as the K11 provides. There is probably also some Iran chalcolithic-like DNA in Yamnaya and I know that Davidski likes to use Iran chalcolitic for modelling, beside CHG or without CHG. But different experiments have shown, that CHG seems somewhat more suitable, if you just use one of these both components. If you just use Iran Chalcolitic and no CHG you get a part of CHG pushed into ENF (instead of all into Iran chalcolithic).

Interesting statements. As for your statement about Pinarbasi HG I can not see this confirmed. Here are results of that Pinarbasi HG and a lot of Iron Gates HG. At least if you do provide Barcin neolithic as a component Pinarbasi HG does not get notably WHG while Iron gates HG heavily do.

Actually EHG is more of the main ancient components of Finns and other NE Europeans such as Karelians, Estonians, other Balts, etc rather than of Europeans as a whole. If I am not wrong, WHG is the main hunter gather component of NW Euros including Norwegians, Swedes rather than EHG.

One could maybe first think so. But it's not applicable. Have a look at the above (a number of posts above) posted results from the K11 (WHG-EHG) calculator. Even Portugese have much more EHG then WHG. And the explanation is easy. Yamnaya has roughly 50% EHG and 0% WHG.
