He has the world junior record at 100m freestyle and the best time in this event in both juniors and seniors this year. He's 16 yo.

He looks quite mature for 16 yo

I would say he is some kind of Pontid but since he seems to be brachy I would say it can be some Alpine element over there as well

Popovici is just the Romanian spelling of the Serbian name Popovic. It's a pretty common name in Romania.

Yes and no, it's one of those times where the ukrainianised and serbianised suffixes coincide. It's the ukrainianised/serbianised form of Popa, just like Popescu is wallachianised and Pop is transylvanianised. It occurs the most in Suceava, Botosani (Ukrainian influences) and Timis, Caras-Severin (Serbian influences). Given that the dude is from Bucuresti, I find it more likely that the paternal line is from Northern Moldova than Banat.

Not really. You have to look at the frequency of the name.

Popovici in Romania/Moldova is almost twice more frequent than Popovych in Ukraine and 20(!) more times than Popovich in Russia, therefore is quite unlikely that Popovici in Moldova originates in Ukraine or Russia. The more likely story is that this name originates in Serbia where is at least 5 times more frequent than in Romania.

For Moldova it's very unlikely to have any relation to Serbs. Here Serbs had like only 2-3 small villages around Hincesti district. Bulgarian I can understand, but this is not a Bulgarian suffix and Popovici is the rarest in the South, where Bulgarian elements exist.
Which makes me think that in Moldovas on both sides of the river, the influence comes from an Ukrainian source. I doubt they were literal Ukrainians in the beginning, it looks more like ukrainianisation/russification. If you look at the spread within Ukraine, it disproportionately occurs in the Carpathians. This is the most common surname among the people in Zakarpattya. Maybe that means that the Popovici are originally Romanians from around Northern Bukovina and/or Pocutia.

Wallachians and Moldovans migrated back and forth a lot between the regions since the middle ages. The descendants of the Serbians who migrated to Romania 300 years are now in every Romanian region, and in particular in the capitals of the historical regions, that's why you find many of them in Iasi and Suceava.

You are probably using the map from www.hartanumeromanesti.eu , but that is often misleading because the the size of the dots are not properly scaled with the number of families, particularly for common names like this one. On that website, when searching for Popovici, the size of the dots for Iasi, Timisoara and Bucharest have the same size, because it exceeds the maximum size of the dots. In reality, Bucharest has far more Popovici families than the other two.

The map at https://nume.ottomotor.ro/ doesn't show a dot for every place that has families with the searched name, but it scales the name properly with the count for every county:

He has long bones not muscular mass. Steroids can't help you grow bones, in fact, steroids can lead to bone loss.

This guy just lit up the World Champs in Budapest with back to back golds in 100/200 free. Next van den Hoogenband. Alex Popov also sends his regards. Dude has an insanely long torso and long wingspan.. perfect for swimming.

Seeing him more I changed my impression. He looks typical slum boy: gypsy admixture is very highly possible but he doesn't look either Balkan nor Indian
