BBC- People's Century - Freedom Now (Ghana Excerpts)

This clip is part (#3) of (#3) of the excellent 26-part historical series produced by BBC, "People's Century".

This footage is from the episode titled "Freedom Now", which covers the struggles for independence in India & Africa, with a particular focus on the Gold Coast/Ghana, and the rise & fall of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Clip (#3) starts with the creation of Nkrumah, the icon. However, the Ghanaian economy begins to falter, as bold projects begin to fail through corruption, poor planning, and economic decline.

As the Ghanaian economy falters, Ghana becomes a one-party state under Nkrumah. No dissent is tolerated - while Nkrumah's former CPP stalwart, K.A. Gbedemah, flees the country, others risk imprisonment or worse for speaking out against the Nkrumah regime.

Eventually, Nkrumah is overthrown in a military coup, the pretext of many to come during Ghana's turbulent period governance during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
