I think Americans are not English and have highjacked the term 'Anglo-Saxon'. The English are not 'Anglo-Saxon' the pure Anglo-Saxons were peasants since the Norman invasion. The English are English. As an American of Irish, English and German/French descent I have more in common with a SouthWest Englishman than a a 'pure Germanic' American. The English are mostly Iron Age Celtic with some Anglo-Saxon and Norman French admixture and possible French Hugeunot refugees. So most English are significantly Britannic and don't look straight out of Denmark/Northern Germany but more like the Northern French and Benelux. Yeah, Americans are more Anglo-Saxon than the English but that just makes Americans more peasants than the English genetically.

I think the strain is as significant in Britain as it is in northern Germany or at least it is fairly significant in southern England anyway, subnordics are quite common and Alpine types proper are common enough to not look foreign.
