View Full Version : Post Your Level of Lactose Intolerance

I'm an ethnic Hungarian with Germanic shift from my father's side. I have a Turkic/Central Asian genetic background as well. I score every possible lactose intolerance result; this is not surprising since it bothers me horribly every time I eat it. I haven't consumed dairy products for nearly a decade (I stopped in my mid-late teens). What I found interesting is that there seems to be a range of lactose intolerance, and I have read in other threads on this forum that there are people who score one result of lactose intolerance but are able to handle dairy to some degree. Some have theorized that you can train your body to better handle lactose over time when eating dairy. However, it could be that they have more genetic tolerance than intolerance, and the dairy they consume is either hard cheese or other fermented product with lower lactose levels.
I've posted my results below and the relevant SNPs. You can also see my results in the attached image below. Here are the SNPs you can check to see how lactose intolerant you are. Compare the results with my image to see how well you can tolerate dairy products.
Please post your results below, your ethnic background, and if you can tolerate dairy in your real-life experience (if you can, what amounts, types, and frequency). All TA members' results are welcome, but Hungarian members and members with Hungarian or other steppe ancestry are especially encouraged to post their results. A poll is added for additional data. Thanks to everyone who participates!

Looks like rs182549 - C / T saves my butt, as I can in fact drink milk. But not too much. I can have a bowl of breakfast cereal, as long as I go easy on the milk, and don't have anymore later, then I'm okay. But I can certainly overdo it with milk, leads to bad abdominal cramping for me.
Cheese is fine for me, I like it and I don't restrict. But I should work on eating less of it, I don't need the high fat content.
So I would vote mildly intolerant, and it stops me. :)

I don't know about my SNPs, but I can intake dairy surprisingly well for someone with Levantine (via Roman times) and Chinese ancestry.

I can't eat cheese and any type of product that includes whey(a piece of biscuit with whey makes me sick whole day). I can't drink milk. The negligence causes serious effects which prevent me to do my daily stuff.
There are exceptions, I can actually eat chocolate that includes some percentage of milk, and also fermented products such as ayran and yogurt, however, it must be limited. If eating too much yogurt, then it will still cause the effects.
These all began in the early 20s, I was drinking daily 1l milk with no problem at all before then.

I have absolutely NO idea what these markers mean to be honest.
But YDP says this: People with your genotype are more likely to be lactose intolerant and be unable to digest milk.
Well, "currently" I can drink milk and also I am a huge cheese lover.

I was born in Normandy, my ancestry is 50% Norman (the rest is Breton and Lorrain), educated in Normandy, I live nearby Normandy, the country of dairy products, butter, creamy sauces and soft cheeses (Camenbert, Bray, Neufchâtel...), I love them all, I drink only whole milk (except when partying, when dark ale and white wine are preferred)...
If I were lactose intolerant I wouldn't survive.

I drink milk and eat cheese like it's nothing, with no problems. So does my mother and so did my grandparents eat it with no problem until their death.

In fact it is being lactose tolerant that is the weird thing.

I am not sure if that’s the same as lactose intolerant. I’m just allergic to the milk, period. I didn’t know there were gene markers associated with lactose intolerance. I don’t have that DNA info. Maybe it’s 23 and me that does that info.

My lactose intolerant breaking point is laying right underneath the cow's nipple. I would do anything for milk but I won't do that.

First two are likely more important. I can drink raw milk all day, even used to drink fresh milk from the cows where i grew up at my grandparents.
