Maybe it's not the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about minorities in Slovakia, you would say think of Hungarians, Rusyns, Gypsies, Czechs or Germans but there are also some Balkan minorities in area of Bratislava. One of minorities are Croats who even have special minority status in Slovakia.

Some people may ask how Croats settled here? It is all because of Ottoman attacks so some of Croats decided to more more north. First bigger wave of Croats came in the middle of XVI century, and two next waves in the beginning and in the middle of XVII century.

They live mostly in Čunovo, Devínska Nova Ves, Jarovce which are districts of Bratislava and Chorvátski Grob which is village close to Bratislava, but you can find some Croats here and there all over Slovakia but at very low percentage. In 2011 census group of 1200 people identified as Croatian.

There is association of Croats in Slovakia(Croatian: Hrvatski kulturni savez u Slovačkoj (http://www.slovhrvati.sk/hr/news.html), there is also Facebook website of the same name) which exists since 1990. It takes care of cultural events which relate to Croatia.

The events I know of are:

- Festival Chorvátskej kultúry - as name says festival of Croat culture so music, food, folk art etc, it happens in the beginning of September

- Dobrodošli - festival of Croat folk music, it happens in July

Some Croat folk groups of Slovakia also appear on festival where you celebrate end of gathering crops and some Christmas concerts.
One of such groups is Chorvatanka from Chorvatski Grob
