I agree and enjoy these things myself. But it has struck me this year how absent traditional Christmas carols are in the public sphere. I never hear them on the radio or at the store. I was obliged to watch a Michael Buble Christmas special last week, and it was entirely secular Christmas songs until "Silent Night" at the very end, with even a nod to Hanukkah for the Jewish New Yorkers in the audience. It's as though the whole holiday can be boiled down to chestnuts by the fire, sleigh rides, Santa's gift-giving, and Frosty the Snowman. That is such a vapid sum total, a picture of a picture.
