I don't agree that condoms and birth control are modern day inventions. There are evidences of using such methods even in Ancient Egypt.
As a modern day invention, I would go for all the conveniences making us lazy, fat and stupid like: the remote control; satelite TV; pizza delivery; virtual sex; Facebook...
