View Full Version : Speak Dutch to me!

Absinthe

The effort of trying to understand Dutch is highly entertaining to me! :thumb001:

At times, it somehow seems to me as misspelled english, at times I can make out scandinavian influences, and in general I get my kicks out of trying to understand it... :)

So, speak Dutch to me! I will try and make out what you're saying. I promise not to cheat (that would defeat my own purpose) by google translation, babelfish, etc.

I may use a dictionary for individual words.

Afrikaans is also acceptable. :)

Geen probleem. Vanaf nu af aan spreek ik geen woord Engels meer tegen je (tenzij we ons in Engelstalige draden bevinden). :D

Absinthe

No problem. From now on I can speak no more english words to you.

(Unless we are in the english-speaking threads) <-- ? :p

Bijna... wacht even:
No problem. From now on I will not speak one word of English to you. (lett. vertaald).

Ja dat laatste leek me natuurlijk logisch. Nederlands is nu niet bepaald een lingua franca :p

That's kind of harder, wild guess:

Yes, that latest (leek?) naturally logic. Dutch is without a doubt the new lingua franca.

:p

Nope. not even close:

Yes- the last sentence* made of course sense to me. Dutch is not exactly a lingua franca.

*that I will only speak English to you in English-speaking threads

Misschien later vandaag :D Ik ga even douchen en wat te eten maken.
Ik rammel van de honger !

Absinthe

Perhaps later today. I am about to shower and then eat. I am (rattling?) with hunger!

Is your (plural) public holiday in Greece Friday and Monday?

Fortunately the supermarket is always open where I am. I must probably buy milk and bread.

Correct! ;) It is Afrikaans though, which is very close to Dutch.

Is your (plural) public holiday in Greece Friday and Monday?

Almost. Literally, do you have public holidays in Greece tomorrow (Friday) and Monday?

Fortunately the supermarket is always open where I am. I must probably buy milk and bread.

Close.

Fortunately the supermarket is still open where I live.

:thumbs up

That's "good afternoon" in 100% correct Afrikaans. :thumb001:

Liewe BA (nie Baraccus nie). Ek moes gisteraand deur die nag werk en het eers laat vanoggend opgestaan. Daar is min kos by die huis so nes Loki sal ek ook inkopies by die supermark moet gaan doen.

Hopelik is hierdie boodskap nie te moeilik vir jou om te ontsyfer nie! :D

Ek moet = Ich muß = I have to

Ek wil = Ich will = I want

That's kind of hard, I am working on it.

You said

Dear B.A. (I don't get the parenthesis)

Then you said something about you must work night today, and that at last holidays start (?).

There little in the house so like Loki I also must go and shop at the supermarket.

^that was a rather free translation

BA Baracus was the A-Team member with the mohican and the darker pursuasion. I joked about the initials being the same as your tNP ID and said "not Baracus".

I had to work through the night last night, I got up late this morning, there is little food in the house and I have to go shopping for it like Loki did.

Pretty good, overall. :)

Zozo, onze Absinthe wilt werken aan haar Nederlands.

The Lawspeaker

Ja.. dan lijkt het me toch onze plicht om haar wegwijs te maken in onze prachtige taal met al haar onvertaalbare uitdrukkingen, haar onmogelijke grammatica en haar bizarre uitzonderingen

Dat zijn woorden die we hier niet gebruiken, Phleg ! En de eerste is trouwens een letterlijk vertaald anglicisme.

Brings back memories. Neuk was a word I often used in reference to my younger brother, as in threatening what I would do to him. In this context, it meant I wanted to beat him up. ;)

In het Zeeuwse dialect schijnt "neuken" vallen te betekenen  Ik kan me dus indenken dat er soms komische situaties ontstaan.
