Liking hip-hop != wigger.

Many (underground) white rappers often talk about or have imagery related to their heritage in their music, videos, or CD slips. And black rappers respect those ones more. I've heard a black rapper say about white rappers who promote white self-hate/white guilt that they should "Step away from the mic forever".

I like some rap, not all, and I like all music pretty much.

Ironically, I used to hate rap when I was young but as I get older my musical taste is getting more wide. When I was young I only listened to metal and wouldn't even eat off of a plate touched by someone who didn't listen to metal.

But really the rap I like is from the 90s, and there is other types of music from the 90s I hated back in the 90s that I like now. I used to troll a Radiohead board back in '95, I hated them so much, now when "Creep" comes on I'm singing along. Same with Oasis. Even the bad music from then is better than most music today (yeah yeah, guess I'm getting old).

I haven´t delved into the genre that deeply yet, but there is plenty of great hip hop from the early 90s, in particular. Some 80s stuff is pretty good too although it can be of an acquired taste to some. Nowadays most of the good stuff is to be found in the "underground", obviously.

I see no reason in completely brushing off a whole multifaceted genre because of some overrepresented rotten apples in the mainstream. I could just as well disregard all rock because of rubbish like Nickelback. In fact I´d rather listen to pretty much any (modern) pop than the "rock" you hear of the radio these days which tends to be some of those banal stuff imaginable.

Anyway, whatever you may think of the "culture" surrounding a specific genre, as far as musical merits go hip hop is comparable to any other genre, it can be both good or bad.

Well for me it was about the negative aspects of the culture (not to mention that most "hip hoppers" listen to bad hip hop imo). Rap became big when I was a wee lad, most of my friends started listening to rap. I did so too. However, then I learned English and opened my eyes to the surrounding world and realized a couple of things:

1) I could not relate to the music in any meaningful way and the lyrics were idiotic.

2) There was nothing more pathetic than a pampered Finnish kid pretending to be a ghetto nigger. Nothing.

I began to view the entire subculture as rather ridiculous, not to mention a negative influence from a nationalist point of view. Most hip hoppers are hopelessly "anti-racist," and support agendas and themes of the far-left, at least here. There's no getting around that fact, despite the existence of some nationalist hip hop groups.

Marketing. I watched a biography on Drake (not a fan Drake's music, but was the only thing on) and it mentioned how his record label wanted him to put forth the "gangsta" image. He told them to pound sand and did his own thing. He is far from a gangsta, he's a rich kid from Toronto who was an actor on Canadian TV when he was young. I have new respect for him after he did that, though.

I personally usually just focus on the music. Good music is usually created by talented individuals, bad music usually by morons with nothing else to do but run their mouths about stupid shit. So there can be big divergences. I usually pick the ones with good music and something to say. Also, even a lot of "gangsta rap" can be surprisingly self-conscious and humorous. Even those guys don´t always take themselves that seriously. As an alternative to regular hip hop you could try instrumental hip hop where the focus is exclusively on the beats and the samples.

Definitely. Although the same goes for fans of any other major genre, except maybe for Classical and Jazz. Those cats are almost always cool as fuck, or alternatively psychopaths. ;) And no, Kenny G is not Jazz although it may turn people into serial killers.

True with a lot of hip hop, but not all. And even when you may not be able relate to the topic there´s a lot of hip hop that is not vulgar at all and can be very intriguing and intelligent. And even further down if you don´t care for the meaning of the lyrics, just the rhymes and the creative ways the words have been put together is a craft by itself. Disclaimer at this point. When I´m talking about all these positive qualities I´m referring to the best of the best. No doubt there is a lot of shit out there that is not compatible with the appraisal above. :tongue

That´s why I barely ever listen to Finnish rap, although not that I listen to the lyrics that much anyway, the beats are usually just weak.
