He clearly dyes both his hair and his eyebrows black in most photos, so his natural hair color can only be guessed at.

East Med or Pontid

Even ignoring his hair he looks quite exotic for the region.

Do you think he might be Roma, or do you believe he's just a dark indigenous Balkan?

I would have assumed him to be Greek before any sort of Balkan Slav.

I would be very surprised if he was Roma.

You have to remember that many people in northern Greece are also Macedonians. Most North Macedonians (FYROM) have Bulgarian origin. So they are closer in appearance to these two countries than say, Croatia or Bosnia.

This man would fit just fine amongst ethnic Macedonians, just darker/more exotic than average

That was my impression, but I lack the familiarity with Balkan ethnic groups to clearly distinguish between darker indigenous Balkan types and Roma with notable local admixture.

Right, Greece, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria are all neighbors, so it makes sense they'd look somewhat alike.

I do have some familiarity with Bulgarians, since there were a fair number of them at my high school. My impression was they were quite phenotypically diverse, as I've seen Bulgarians who can pass for Russian, but also Bulgarians who I think could pass for darker Greeks or even for Armenians. What is your impression?

Indeed, there was a video from Deutsche Welle about Bulgarians working on the Greek island of Santorini, and the two Bulgarians interviewed were almost opposite in phenotype. One was a very fair pigmented type who could easily pass as Russian or Ukrainian, while the other was a hairy, olive-skinned East Med looking-guy who could have been Telly Savalas' cousin. I'll make a post about that video at some point.

Forget Russia/Ukraine, there are some Bulgarians who look straight up Scandinavian with Tronder phenotype! Also many can pass in West Asia, some up to Afghanistan with Proto Iranid and East Med phenotypes. The diversity is unmatched by any European country and is even more incredible when you consider the population is just 6 million.

I would suggest going on the Bulgarian sub-forum:
