ABC News suspended "The View" host Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks on Tuesday night, hours after she apologized for having falsely declared on the daytime program that the Holocaust was "not about race."


"I said the Holocaust wasn't about race and was instead about man's inhumanity to man," Goldberg added. "But it is indeed about race because Hitler and the Nazis considered Jews to be an inferior race."

She continued, "Now, words matter and mine are no exception. I regret my comments, as I said, and I stand corrected. I also stand with the Jewish people as they know and y'all know, because I've always done that."

After her on-air apology, Goldberg hosted a discussion with Anti-Defamation League president Jonathan Greenblatt. Greenblatt later said on Twitter that he accepted Goldberg's apology.

But Goldberg's initial comments had still roiled staffers across ABC News. Some staffers believed disciplinary action was warranted, according to people familiar with the matter who asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to publicly comment on the matter.

Others, however, came to Goldberg's defense and noted that her comments were made out of ignorance, not malice. One ABC News staffer told CNN that Goldberg had apologized and appeared to learn from her mistake, which they believed was key in evaluating whether to accept her apology.

What a horrible crime she committed.

I agree that the Nazis perceived Jews as being an inferior race, but I don't think she should be punished for being incorrect. It's not the same, for example, as repeating false information to the public about a trial in process, such as the Rittenhouse trial, which the women on this show The View did. It's just a dumb opinion that hurts no one that can be countered by an argument. The other women on The View are morons, so the best they can do is disagree without coherently explaining why they disagree.

It has to be about race. The holocaust is the main pillar of modern anti racism, and like any religion you need a sacred martyr with a founding event people can repent on. If tomorrow here a disproportionate amount of Bretons or Basques would turn out to be thieves, fraudsters and murderers, nobody would question there isn't a problem with them, as nobody cause say it's about their race. It absolutely has to be about race in the story telling wether it was completely true at all time or just one part of the story. The outrage doesn't make any sense unless it's perceived as Goldberg arguing the Holocaust was just another crime among many committed by man against man and so the offense is that the Holocaust doesn't have a special place above all other world tragedies, which I don't think was her explicit intention but it can be perceived as being implied. Otherwise, I don't see why anyone would be offended by what she said. Her opinion is incorrect but doesn't offend.

I could understand why someone would change their surname to one associated with Jews in an entertainment industry dominated by Jews. She could try to present herself as part Jewish and that would give her a boost over other Black performers. Although I dislike her politics I can't deny she is a talented actress but there are many talented actresses who never get opportunities and so perhaps it did benefit her to pretend she was part Jewish.

I’m a mutt basically. I’m the best of all – of all the things that go into making humans.” Confusingly, she has also claimed to be “a quarter Mexican.” When Walters asked her where she’d be had she not changed her name to Whoopi Goldberg, she replied “I would have been a Tupperware lady.” It seems that Caryn Johnson saw value in appearing to be Jewish.

There are other versions of the story of Whoopi’s name: one tells of her “Catholic-Jewish” mother suggesting she adopt a stereotypically Jewish name to ensure her future success. Elsewhere she claims her family is “Jewish, Buddhist, Baptist and Catholic” and that she “took the last name for a Jewish ancestor.”

But I’ve struggled to find any specific or direct reference to an actual person called Goldberg in her family in all the years she’s been explaining her choice of stage name.
