Gagauz as #1?
The Gagauz people is an European-looking Turkic speaking ethnicity in the South of Besarabia. If the Great-Aunt would be a Gagauz that result would be an especially interesting genetic result.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gagauz_people
As for the Gagauz people it's not about Bulgars, but rather Bolgars (speculatively), that were Turkic speaking, before they got Slavicised.

Identical in what sense? They speak different languages and are different ethnicities.

Oh she could be a Gagauz indeed, especially since Gagauz settled Basserabia. Also she's close to Pomaks who are Bulgarian Muslims.
Thing is that both Gagauz and Pomak are essentially Bulgarian origin folk with little to none external influences.
Gagauz are pure eastern Bulgarians who got linguistically Turkified afik. They are usually more Meddish type of Bulgarians from what I saw (make sense as east Bulgarians are more south shifted than western ones)

Their origin is depicted as obscure with a lot of different theories (see the Wikipedia link). And I think that DNA results are not yet taken into account so this could be really interesting.
Turkified Bulgarians? Maybe. But odd that they are mostly orthodox Christians. Like when Turks would have Turkified Balkanites that remained Christians.

Ye they mysterious :P
but see this from wiki, well written IMO:
Population genetics
In DNA comparisons, the Gagauz were found to be more closely related genetically to neighboring southeastern European groups than to linguistically related Anatolian populations.[31] More considerable distinctions in the distribution of Y chromosome components appeared between the Gagauz and other Turkic peoples.[13]
The similarity to neighboring populations may be due to the lack of social barriers between the local and the Turkic-Orthodox populations of the Balkan Peninsula. Another possibility is language shift in accordance with the dominant minority model, i.e. Turkification.[32]
Gagauz belong to Y-DNA haplogroups I2a (23.6%), R1a (19.1%), G (13.5%), R1b (12.4%), E1b1b1a1 (11.1%), J2 (5.6%) and Haplogroup N (2.2%). Finally, the phylogenetic analysis of Y-DNA situates Gagauz most proximal to Bulgarians, Macedonians, Romanians, Serbs and other Balkan populations, resulting in a high genetic distance from the Turkish people and other Turkic peoples.[33] The analyses showed that Gagauz belong to the Balkan populations, suggesting that the Gagauz language represents a case of language replacement in southeastern Europe.[34] According to a more detailed autosomal analysis of thousands of SNPs, not just of the sex chromosome, Gagauz are most proximal to ethnic Macedonians, followed by Greek Macedonians apart from Thessaloniki, and others such as Bulgarians, Romanians and Montenegrins.[35]
After a genetic comparison between the populations of the Balkans, Anatolia, and Central Asia, the results showed that the Gagauz are part of the Balkan genetic group.

Yes, I just saw that I missed that!
Maybe this laguage information can also give some further hints for what happened:
"The Gagauz language belongs to the Oghuz branch of the Turkic languages, which also includes the Azerbaijani, Turkish, and Turkmen languages. The Gagauz language is particularly close to the Balkan Turkish dialects spoken in Greece, northeastern Bulgaria, and in the Kumanovo and Bitola areas of North Macedonia. The Balkan Turkic languages, including Gagauz, are a typologically interesting case, because they are closely related to Turkish and at the same time contain a North-Turkic (Tatar or Kypchak) element besides the main South-Turkic (Oghuz) element (Pokrovskaya, 1964). The modern Gagauz language has two dialects: central (or "Bulgar") and southern (or maritime).[37]"

Gagauz speak an Oghuz Turkic language, the southern branch specific for today Turks and Azeris. And together with their genetic results clearly show an evident sign of recent linguistic assimilation. Cuman/pecheneg theory don't have any basis, since these old Turkic populations spoke on Kipchak languages, the northern branch of Turkic languages specific for today Tatar populations.

Probably some Tatar influence. In Dobrudja, from where Gagauz came, lived and still live today Tatar populations colonised by Turks.

It seems not to be historically related to these 1812 founded settlements in the south.

Thanks guys for posting, I appreciate it. I will not say were exactly her parents are from, I'm afraid I will be doxxing myself, but I'll say this, there's one surname that is of Turkic origin, and the village is close to Gagauzia, so based on this I'd assume they were bulgaria/gagauz mixed. The test seems to pick it up.
Her parents were bulgarian speakers tho (my great-grandparents).

I find it quite interesting and surprising that he turns out to be more Southern than average Bulgarian, despite their location
I would have expect rather the opposite, given their location, I would have assumed they mixed with local Moldovans or Ukrainians, and to turn out more "Northern" than average Bulgarian

Thanks. And again Gagauz comes up as #1. The only thing that can relativate that is that we admittedly don't have references for Bulgarians in Besarabia and that these could be as close as well.
Left beside the exact ancestry of the testee (whether more or less mixed Bulgarian and Gagauz, what are the particular villages etc.) this is actually another highscore of what a DNA test can perform: In a world wide context the testee's origin is geographically close to pinpointed!

What is interesting is that all Bulgarian results I have seen from Ukraine all were much more southern, than average Bulgarian.
These are results of Odessa Bulgarian ( it was posted some time ago on Apricity )

The same with my Bulgarian part from Ukraine, 1/5 piece of it is clearly Caucasian/West-Asian-like.

Are there many tested?
Some score southern, they might be Bulgarized gagauz, or mixed with locals Greeks in Ukraine, but for the most part, Bulgarians in Bessarabia are heavily mixed with Ukrainians and Russians and look on average more Slavic than the average Bulgarian

I will not say were exactly her parents are from, I'm afraid I will be doxxing myself,
How is that doxxing? There are hundreds of thousands of people in Moldova and you're not even from Europe yourself.

How can Gaguz be Bulgariazed when they are Turkified Bulgarians themselves?
they are literally original eastern Bulgarians. Thus makes sense they will be more Med due to historical Greek influence on Black Sea coast.
But if some Ukrainian Bulgarians score much more west Asian than modern Bulgarians in Bulgaria or Gagauz do it means they are probably Pontic Greek admixed.

Aren't Gagauz also Bolghar hangovers? They don't look dramatically different from Moldovans and should be closer to their neighbours, rather than anything in the Altai republic, so I'm not surprised by their relation, the first Bulgarian Tsars weren't even Slavs.

I have done extensive research on my genealogy and have been working on this over the past 6 years, If I start giving away names it wouldn't be too hard to "find me" online.
I'd rather remain cryptic, specially here, just a random person interested in genetic testing is fine.

Gagauz have basically zero Turkic or mongoloid admixture. Moldovans and eastern Romanians have more of it than them.
They are Balkan-Slavic mix, with Balkan being stronger and having lot of late Roman Empire (Anatolian Greek) like admixture.
but whole of Balkan has that, especially eastern part.

My aunts top 10 genetic matches in GEDMatch have bulgarian and oddly enough serbian surnames, some americans (Anglo surnames) and two people with "spanish" surnames, that likely are descendants like me.
