Well, nutmeg back then was one of the most valuable commodities in Western Europe, largely thanks to its purported power to cure anything from flatulence to the bubonic plague, and no, they didn't genocide innocent natives. The Anglo-Dutch trade wars and rivalry only accelerated when British traders had incited the natives against the Dutch East India company (both nations have been controlled by mercantile and colonial interests for centuries, the Dutch East India Company was the richest private enterprise in the world at the time, previously the Dutch traded Manhattan to the British for their claim on Banda Islands). The natives being violent savages ambushed and murdered the Dutch company representatives and negotiators on the island, the Dutch, cruel and vindictive as they may be, absolutely wrecked the natives and expelled all the natives who had done this.
