I mentioned in another thread that FTDNA, from time to time, has promotions. Well, it is that time of year again. This time, they are starting things early. Good opportunity to test your Y-STR markers. Same goes for testing your mtDNA full sequence ("FMS"). To give an idea how much greater resolution one can obtain (depending on how common your line is), by having one's entire mitochondrial genome sequenced, one need simply refer to my experience. At 23andMe, I am HV4. HV4 samples at GenBank include: Italians, Russians, Anatolian Turks, Spaniards, Jordanians, Egyptians, and myself, an Assyrian. By testing my mtDNA with FTDNA, and specifically, opting for the FMS, I learned that I share mutations unique to two members/populations of the HV4 group. The Egyptian and Jordanian (HV4a2). By comparing values even further than the SNP defining HV4a2, my nearest match was the Jordanian.

As we approach the holiday season, we feel having one BIG promotion for a sufficient amount of time best supports our volunteer Administrators, in their effort to recruit new members. Current members will also benefit by having simultaneously reduced prices for upgrades.

Effective immediately this promotion will end on December 31, 2011.

We hope that this will give a big boost to your projects!

They don't have a subscription. You pay once and you get results for as long as they stay in business.

I can't afford it right now in any case, & not before this promotion will expire. Oh well. :shakefist

Does anyone know if their Y-DNA tests check for subclades of R1b1b2a1a2f? Is there a list of what is tested? The comprehensive test is tempting...

You can order individual SNPs À la carte. They ordinarily cost $29 each. But, first you have to test your STR markers with them. Opt for the cheapest STR marker test, and then test for the individual SNPs. Since they are not discounting the 12 STR test ($99), it might be worth it to add $20, and test the additional 25 markers (37 STR = $119, according to the promo).

Most of the SNPs on the R tree at ISOGG will be available to test.
