The Avars were clearly Mongoloid people, the Caucasian Avar are different story. There was always some Mongolic and Turkic elements pouring into Europe. Though it seems these Mongolic and Turkic groups did not leave much genetic trace, the only ones that seem to were the Mongols aka Golden Horde. Avars interestingly enough allied with the Persians against the Byzantines.
