this bugs the shit out of me, how does that even happen?
i know people with bright carroty hair, and their eyes are hazel or navy blue.
i on the other hand, and lots of people, have sandy blonde hair which isn't much lighter than that, if at all, and have those powdery celeste eyes, if you will, not even like azure or anything.
it's a real shocking phenomenon.

It would depend on the population that they are from. If they are from a population with a lot of dark eyes then they are more likely to have dark eyes. In Ireland many are blue eyed of course but a lot of redheads have hazel and green eyes which look really nice with red hair.

Pigmentation mismanagment. My brother is red haired with brown eyes and I'm not far away from that, too.

I remember reading that the melanin mutation that allows reddish pigment to be produced also makes it hard for blue-green eyes to occur, although I don't know to which extent it's the effect of red haired people having had darker eyes historically and thus those two traits getting linked, or a true genetic cause-effect correlation :chin:

The genes for red hair are independent from those determining eye colour. That's why it is more common in many countries to see someone with red hair and hazel or brown eyes, than a blonde with such.

Because Brown or darker eyes are always dominant regardless of the population, red hair, and light blue/green eyes are recessive. Also, the genes responsible for red hair, and the ones responsible for eye colour are two different things.

Plenty of redheads have blue or green eyes. Having red hair or even carrying one variant affects skin colour making it less likely that you tan, more freckling and also more susceptible to skin cancer.

About 1–2% of subjects of European origin, but for example 6–13% of people in Wales, Scotland and Ireland, have red hair, depending on the definition of red hair, method of measurement and age-cohort1,2. It has been suggested that this trait spread in Europe by frequency-dependent selection acting in favor of women with rare phenotypes3. It has been proposed recently that the red hair phenotype, in contrast to the blond hair phenotype, is kept steadily rare by some form of natural selection acting in the direction opposite to sexual selection4. People with red hair, pale skin color and the inability to tan have the highest risk of developing melanoma5. The red hair/fair skin phenotype is usually, but not always, the result of inactivation of the gene for the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), the product of which, a cyclic ATP-stimulating G protein, regulates the synthesis of pigments. Individuals with low receptor activity produce the red/yellow pheomelanin pigment instead of the brown/black eumelanin pigment6. Pheomelanin has minimal protective activity against ultraviolet radiation. Moreover, pheomelanin, or products of its metabolism, increases by some unknown UV-radiation-independent mechanism oxidative DNA damaging7,8,9,10. This again strongly increases the risk of melanoma in both sun-exposed and non-exposed skin10.

Red hair + green and hazel eyes I think is more common than red hair + blue and brown eyes.

That would depend on the country. In Ireland I would say the blue eyes and red hair is the more common combo because blue eyes are the most common in the population but redheads can have any eye colour.

Does that mean that in Ireland green eyes are rare?

It also seems that many there have curly hair.

'
No just that there is a higher percentage of people with blue eyes. I don't know the percentage of green eyes for all of Ireland but I have seen a statistic from the past that had green eyes at 20% in Cork for example.

I'd say any country with higher percentages of blue eyes will have more green eyes in the population than countries with higher percentages of brown eyes.

The article below gives this figure.

The highest concentration of people with green eyes is found in Ireland, Scotland, and northern Europe. In fact, in Ireland and Scotland, more than three-fourths of the population has blue or green eyes – 86 percent!

Natural blond hair and brown eyes is not very common, but it’s said to be more in Slavic-speaking countries to even Germany and northern France. I have seen some in my country but definitely not common.

Not. Red hair and blue eyes is rarest hair and eye color combination. The only reason why you accustomed to it, is due to the fact that you are around a population which predominantly blue or light-eyed. For example, Ireland has a very blue-eyed population already therefore people regardless of hair color are blue-eyed. is due to a clash of very recessive genes for hair and eye color. As red hair is even more recessive than blond. My own hair color is auburn and my eye color is a bluish-green.

Yes that is what I said. I was speaking about Ireland and I said it would depend on the population and what eye colour was the most numerous.

I actually have relatives a brother and sister both redhaired and one girl had hazel eyes and red hair and the boy had blue eyes and red hair. These are first cousins of mine. When the girl got married she had two boys they both have red hair and hazel/green eyes. The male cousin had 4 children all red heads but all blue eyed. Anyway there a loads of pictures available of redheads in Ireland from the Red haired festivals and many are blue eyed and redheaded.

This is one with blue eyes.
