It's very easy to tell apart for those who speak the language, similar to differences between american and british.
I don't know who he is. Could be the son of portuguese people, but brazilians are often of many ancestries.

Diferences in the accent and vocabulary, but they are the same language. I have a Stephen Hawking book that an uncle of mine brought from Portugal in 2010, back when I didn't care about these cultural stuff, and I could understand it perfectly.

European portuguese is a stress-timed language. Brazilian portuguese is more like a syllable-timed language.

Brazilians pronunces the letter 'l' with the sound of 'w' in the end of syllables.

Standard brazilian portuguese pronunces d and t as affricates. So the syllable 'de' is pronunced like the 'jee' of 'jeep. Likewise the syllable 'te' is proununced as 'chee' of the word 'cheese'.

Standard brazilian portuguese favors the pronoun 'você' as an informal second-person singular pronoun, while portugal uses tu' as an informal pronoun and 'você' as semi-formal.

The brazilian version uses gerund (i'm eating = estou comendo). The portuguese version tends to use the infinitive verb (i'm eating = estou a comer).

To display the future the portuguese version favors using futuro simples (I will eat lasagna = eu comerei lasagna) while the brazilian version favors ir + the infinitive verb (I will eat lasagna = eu irei comer lasagna or eu vou comer lasagna).
