. . what's your opinion on the man known as Hulk Hogan ( Terry Bollea )?

Of course , the first thing many people will think of when they hear that name is that he truly made pro- wrestling popular.

A kind of wrestling super- hero from the 80s . .

- - -

Apart from his persona in wrestling he has also been through some 'tough' situations in his private life...

Many of you probably are familiar with some of his headlines . .

So.. Firstly, how do you view him in his character..?

Yes ,he made pro- wrestling popular ( he was one of the biggest draws of promoter Vince McMahon in the 1980s ) , at one point in his career even made a shocking heel- turn ( wrestling expression for 'a good guy' turning into a 'bad guy' ) and ,despite his ongoing age , he still fought some matches during the last decades . .

Secondly , the man ( Terry Bollea ) himself ?
He had some roles in movies , in private he was even in some harsh situations . . And, many may remember this, some years ago there was even a 'Hulk Hogan racism' scandal going through the press where he was allegedly caught on tape using 'racial slurs'...

^ ^ Regardless what you think of the man , yeah , he surely has been through some tough stuff . .

I never understood the allure of Hulk Hogan. Undertaker was the best character in 90s WWF imo.

I stopped watching WWE when I was like ten, it was so fake and gay (however early PS2 Smackdown games are probably the best WWE games in existence, part of my childhood). I read somewhere the 90's WWF got huge ratings by having the popular wrestler "Stone Cold Steve Austin" in seemingly unbeatable situations by Vince McMahon where he'd somehow overcome them and defy the odds to win the WWF title. It was all scripted but people loved it for some reason.

Hulk Hogan racism is a meme. In fact if he didn't say "nigger" it wouldn't have been controversial because he was simply admitting to not like the idea of his daughter fucking poor blacks, not that he would ban her from fucking blacks altogether. He even tried to rehab it, do some promos with some blacks that would vouch for him, but it didn't work. Mainly because he was too old and not a very effective actor anymore. However, WWE have back peddled on the removal of the Hulk Hogan stuff, he got reinstated into the Hall of Fame, he’s back in the video games, they’re selling licensed Hulk Hogan merchandise again. No way does the WWE let their cash cow go away.

lol , Hogan, if you will , was or should have been the WWF's first 'superman'..

Before the Hulkster-era in wrestling, wrestling was more bound to athleticism..

Bollea got his gimmick from an early 80s tv show 'The Incredible Hulk' and according to lore the McMahons wanted him to have an Irish-sounding last name..

'Hulk' 'Hogan'... A muscle-man into patriotism .. lol ..

As for 'The Undertaker' .. Mark Calaway was the person behind this gimmick . . A 'grim reaper' . .

I think one of the reasons this gimmick was so successful was that it was scary on one side but fascinating on the other . . some kind of 'pro wrestling thriller' , lol . . . .

.. though, one has to say, this had to be one of the toughest things Hogan has ever faced . .

'The ultimate sin' .. Racism .. boo- hoo- hoo- hoo !! ;)

. . what has this man already had?... A steroid scandal , gossip from other wrestlers , in recent times even a 'racism' accusation..?

I bet sometimes he truly wishes he was that superman The Hulk.. Bollea, that is . .

To understand why Hulk Hogan was popular you need to understand the 80s. It was a time of Reagan patriotism with movies like Top Gun, the Rocky movie where he beats up the Russian, the second and third Rambo film, etc. Hulk Hogan was representative of that time. He is - after all - the real American hero. He 'fought' the Russian guy whose name I can't remember (US vs. Russia) and the Sheik (US vs. Iran)

I don't have an opinion on Hulk Hogan. He did wave at me in a burger king parking lot when I was 6. So that was nice of him.

Loved his gimmick, as a child. Found it cringe, the older I got but still fond of him and the whole "wrestling thing".
Before him/WWF, we had Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks. Fondest childhood memory was of my dad getting tickets for me and him to go see Big Daddy, Fit Finley and Giant Haystacks fight at our local town hall, back in the '80s.

The black thing was funny, just seemed like typical American drama.

Like I said , Hulk's name is Terry Bollea and his in-ring-name stems from 'The Incredible Hulk'- character ( which McMahon at that time must have thought Terry resembled ( at least in muscular build-up ) , though one maybe also shouldn't leave out of sight that maybe the early 80' s popularity of of the tv-series maybe made McMahon look for an allusion..) and according to lore the McMahons wanted Bollea to have an irish last- name , Hogan..

..Oh, yeah, dude.. :)
' The Ultimate Warrior '..

One of the WWF' s next- to-Hogan biggest draws. At one time even in talks to kind of become Hogan's successor " to lead the roster of the company "..

I'm sure almost everyone knows him . .

That being said , the story of the man behind this gimmick , Jim Hellwig is at times a sad one though..

He felt kind of second fiddle to Hogan even if there had been plans to establish him as the the new face..

It is reported that he, unsatisfied with his spot, quit the company and only occasionally popped up in wrestling leagues after that from time to time..

Still ,a good one to see if you truly are a fan of this show called 'professional wrestling'.. Yes, it's been confirmed that this sport is based more on stunts and entertainment than anything else . . What many people knew all along . . .

But.. I think Vince McMahon Jr. said it best when he said:

" Is wrestling fake ? ..by that logic, are Arnold Schwarzenegger's movies ' fake '?...

It's not 'fake'.. it's REAL entertainment !! "

:)

.. as I've said in this thread before.. 'The Undertaker ' ( a gimmick portrayed by Mark Calaway) probably was found to be fascinating by people..

' Giant Gonzalez '.. probably the tallest man to ever step into a wrestling ring.. Fascinating indeed , if you will..

'Yokozuna '.. gimmick of a Japanese sumo- wrestler...

Very well done..
When in fact Rodney Anoaʻi, who played this character, was an American citizen.. ;- ) .. In fact a member of a famous Polynesian-American wrestling- dynasty..

'Kamala'.. some parallels to Anoaʻi are there.. deemed as an 'African warrior ' from Uganda, in reality a black American from Mississippi...

'Papa Shango'.. one of the many gimmicks of Charles Wright :D . . .

I wonder if Sheik truly had any grudge with Hulk in real life. I suspect the rants that Sheik is famous for, bad mouthing Hulk and many other wrestlers, was really just a continuation of his gimmick.

Hogan wrote some very kind words upon The Sheiks passing.

I am not a big fan of Catch wrestling, because it promotes steroid use, which is also mainstram now in US, i feel like every other dude is on TRT.

Also since I was a kid i knew it was fake, and to me, crowd cheering for one guy or the other seemed retarded, because its scripted.

.. I have to give my personal view on wrestling here..

Yes , it is 'fake ' ,if you will in the form that it is merely stunts inside the ring..

Strange thing is , even though at all times people seem to have figured it was a show, it always attracted big crowds ..

I think one might even go so far as to view it as some kind of mix between a soap opera and an action-sequence . . The storylines which are told drew hard on real life plus slugging it out in the ring . .

I think one of the appeals it has to people might always have been this kind of mix between soap opera and fighting . .

Plus.. let 's be honest.. it was also at all times filled with some of the most bizzare characters imaginable..

Probably in a way not even many movies could ever contrive.. :D

.. examples..

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EdstulbWAAEC-vV.jpg
"Adam Bomb " :D ... his finishing- move inside the ring was called 'the Adam- smasher' :D

https://ringthedamnbell.files.wordpress.com/2021/01/dies.jpg

"Diesel " .. image of a biker -thug ..

. . . .

Maybe one of the appeals it has to people is / was that it is some kind of action- show, like kickboxing for example combined with alleged real- life drama . . .

My opinion is that it's pathetic that he's so high profile in America, and that Wrestling is so popular there (or was).

It always amazed me as a kid seeing them fill out giant stadiums in the US every week to watch this rubbish.

Sorry for the negativity.

.. gotta say, one story ' bout the Hulkster still stucks with me . .

He himself said , one of the biggest surprises he had during his career was when The Rock , another famous wrestler and fan- favourite , would get booed outta the building after their match after Hogan' s return to WWE . .

He was in WCW , the WWE's main competitor during the 90' s and when WCW went out of business and Vince McMahon more or less bought it it is said that McMahon was naturally sceptical whether he should allow Hogan back in ..

.. in the end he went back to WWE and said numerous times since then that no one had expected that the fans would boo The Rock for him..

( The Rock was a third generation wrestler from a famous wrestling- dynasty and more or less a fan-favourite during the late 90s ..

Yet, it would appear many old WWE fans still remembered Hogan.. )

^ ^..gotta say concerning Andre, for some time before Hogan he was one of the biggest draws in the wrestling world.

It is known among insiders that before Hulk's star truly began to rise he already was in the ring with Andre, the roles were more or less reversed , as in Hogan was a heel back then and Andre a babyface( again , 'heel' is wrestling-parlance for 'bad guy' , 'babyface' for 'good guy' )...

Yes, before his rise, Hogan already worked as a heel in wrestling.

I betcha during the rise of Hulkamania many people wouldn't even have believed this.

https://cdn4.whatculture.com/images/2017/03/05a703e09ddb5216-600x338.png

^ ^.. the match was staged the way that the alleged Japanese wrestler Yokozuna ( Rodney Anoa'i ) who was portrayed as a kind of fortress in WWF at that time would take the title from Hogan to drop it to somebody else later on. The finish was that a ring-photographer would seemingly try to take a picture of Hogan, his camera exploded , seemingly blinding the Hulkster, as Yokozuna would pin him..

Hmmmm.. It would appear when WWF finally decided to ' let the Hulkster go ' it had to be some 'tragic accident ' or something of that sort...

Probably he allegedly couldn't be "beaten fairly ", so some tragic ring-accident had to be the storyline..

.. can't resist naming a real-life enemy, if you will, of Hulk Hogan here..

Jesse Ventura..

Some sources on the internet even claimed that 'there may not be anyone alive more anti-Hulkster than Jesse '..

The alleged story being that Ventura tried to unionise the WWF locker room in the 80s but somebody must have told McMahon Jr. about it which allegedly made Vince angry.. So he was close to firing Ventura..
Ventura allegedly learned that it was Hogan who had snitched him to Vince years later..

Ventura claimed that he allegedly quote "also saw the reason for Hulk Hogan impeding to get the locker room unionised" because "Hogan got more money than all combined "..

Wild claim by Ventura, gotta admit . . .
This is allegedly the reason why Ventura is so anti-Hogan..

He even said that he allegedly hadn't even talked to Hogan anymore since 1991 when he said he made the above discovery . .

- - - - -

Hmmmm.. wrestling and real conflicts.. NOT scripted ones..

If the above is true, that'd be..

...

Anyway, ironically enough, gotta think though of one thing when mentioning Hogan/ Ventura..

.. in the 1986 movie 'The Running Man' Ventura played some kind of 'All- American superman ', called 'Captain Freedom' in the movie..

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTxGbvwNd7hQeqRmImgPyX2zHgLl31eH vDu2A&usqp=CAU

https://thumbs.gfycat.com/AlarmedJadedHerald-size_restricted.gif

.. a Hogan- like 'superhero'..

.. even though in the movie it is part of a dystopic future, in which government constantly lies to its citizens...

.. I won't say that I believe the above story 100 %, nor will I say that I 100 % doubt it, you know, the wrestling-business is full of intrigues behind the scenes I'd say , so it could be true but it also could be false . .

.. whatever the reason for Ventura to tell something like that , Ventura , at least in the movies you once were a Hogan- like 'All-American ' character.. ;).. one could say..

.. I've been PM'd by a member if I could give a little background on this one since quote the person never heard of that before and quote didn't want to search on youtube all day..

Okay... Vince Russo was brought over from WWF to WCW and apparently it was his aspired goal to re-model WCW ( whatever his alleged reason may have been )..

He quote wanted "new, fresh " people in WCW as opposed to older established wrestlers like Hogan or Flair for example..

His ideas have been critisised though, mainly in the way how he wanted this storyline to take place..

At "Bash At The Beach" in 2000 he wanted Hogan to lose a match combined with a strange storyline in which he would get beaten up badly, which Hogan refused to do..

A strange set of circumstances set in during the event, ended by Russo more or less telling the crowd that they would never see Hogan in a WCW-ring again and even exposing alleged behind the scenes politics "behind the curtain "..

.. Hogan indeed wasn't seen inside a WCW-ring again, he continued when WWF bought WCW though..

Yes , sometimes there are even moments in this art-form they call 'sports-entertainment ' which are close to real life..

My personal opinion.

Yes ,I know he is quite a polarising figure , in his character and even the controversies in his real life , but, two things.

We all know the more prominent a person is the more gossip there will be around him / her , probably at all times....Second, whether one likes it or not , today wrestling wouldn' t be where it is without him.. He may have been promoted.. but he is the man..

^ ^ ...you know, one of the most controversial times in Hogan' s career was probably before he left then-WWF (now WWE )..

I think one can see that, from the plans then-WWF's staff had for him , that he was probably not gonna be in the main-events any more, instead they tried him as a tag-team- wrestler . . ( with his real-life colleague Ed Leslie ( Brutus Beefcake, one of his aliases ) )..

However , there is a story widely circulating about Wrestlemania 9,where he appeared with a beaten eye..

On-screen it was explained as "Hogan was beaten by strangers coming out of the gymn the night before"..

However, since that event the truth has come out more than once... It was Randy "Macho Man" Savage who threw a real-life punch ( not a wrestling fake-punch ) at Hogan for allegedly having found out that his wife, Ms. Elizabeth, was ready to divorce him which he blamed on Hogan inviting her to their house, where she allegedly said she wouldn't return to Savage any more..

Wow.. you see, wrestling, this circus , if you will , also can be full of real-life drama...

( it should be noted that later though , in WCW , Hogan and Savage were on the same team for a time again... "Time's a great healer.. " < - - - - ? )

.. how I view Hogan and his career as such..

Yes , he was promoted..

He was, or should have been, the WWF's first ' superman '..

A kind of 'incredible Hulk'-character gone 'avenger of America ', heehee.. or thereabouts..

Btw.. it is said that Lex Luger had been planned to become the next ' American hero' in WWF in '93 after Hogan departed..

Gotta say, he with his' all-american' gimmick always reminded me of a kind of 'Captain America'..

https://static0.thesportsterimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Lex-Luger-SummerSlam-1993.jpg
.. he also had the muscular package to kind of pass as a superhero..

The rest of Luger's story in the wrestling world is a frustrating one at times though..

Even if he , I admit , had to look of a genuine star he kind of always fell short of luck..

In WCW, where he started, he kind of never came close to the championship belt during his first run, and in WWF the plans for Luger after his 'all-american ' gimmick-change also were quickly dropped..

.. even though he had one of the best physiques in all of wrestling he never really got to the top in a straight-forward-way..

"Fate can be cruel.. at times.. ".

" One man is born a hero.. his brother a coward... babies starve , politicians grow fat.. holy men are martyred.. and junkies grow legion....

Why...?.. Luck !! ..blind , stupid , simple, doo-dahh clueless luck !!.."

Hey Cold Fire. I actually remember Luger being brought in as a successor to Hogan. It didn't work so to me it seems Luger just lacked the magic.

One theory...

Luger at one point must've been so pissed that after all the "all- American "- hype that was made around him he still didn't come up very much the card..

A legendary scene from WCW's first 'Monday Nitro' - show ( yes, a show that, as one could guess from the name, was an attempt at competing with 'Monday Night Raw ' )...

.. nobody had expected Luger to be present.. It was towards the end of '95 and Luger , dare I say, quietly wandered between the two promotions... He thereby stabbed WWF in the back.. But, as I said, he was pissed...
This is business, folks..
