View Full Version : My haplogroup is J2a1 (J2-L26) does this mean my ancestors were ancient Greeks?

Hi! Just got the results for my DNA test, somehow my yDNA is J2a1(J2-L26) which is very uncommon for the are I live in. Looked it up and apparently this haplogroup belonged to both ancient Greeks, Minoans and some other folks around the Mediterranean. (There's also a Scottish clan 'Montgomery' which belongs to the J2-L26 haplogroup). Am I interpreting this information correct?
Thanks!

That is a little bit of a surprise. I’m not sure what modern or semi-modern population to attribute to you based on your known ancestry. Congratulations though, cool yDNA.

not really uncommon, its happens in pretty good % in Eastern Europe and Balkans, nothing rly atypical.

Ur haplogroup its ASSOCIATED with Ancient Greeks, Imperial Romans and Phoenicians, thats dont mean u actually descend from they, that haplogroup is at least 15.000yrs old, its prob just a Neolithic Farmer ancestor, also ur Ydna its too broadly, try use that in MorleyDNA for a more accurate result.
Also, dont take yDNA or mtDNA too serious, its just a curiosity, its makeup less than 2% of ur DNA and just tell abt 1 ancestor btw the millions of ancestors that u had, for example a Swede with a branch of E-M215 that peaks in North Italy and was present in some etruscan sample most likely dont have a actual Etruscan ancestor xd, and if for some reason he actually have ONE etruscan ancestor that migrated to Scandinavia in idk Iron Age he still will be a very very Germanic like autossonomically, so yeah haplogroups dont mean much but its cool to see.

Oh, ok. I'm fairly new to this whole thing. Still, it seems very odd to me that despite being pale, blue eyed and mostly european looking I have a yDNA associated with Arabs, Jews, Minoans(based) and Ancient Greeks(also based). And I know that most of my ancestors have lived here in Russia for hundreds of years and we don't have any non-Russians in our family tree. I'm still not sure what to think of this since I've always thought I was indo-european
