If you told me they were balkan Slavs I wouldn't bat an eyelid. I thought Greeks were Mediterranean people, wtf is this man?

Mainly Slavic looking. A few meds can pass as Greek.

These people look closer to Scottish than Syrians . Now I get it .

what's the story of these people in Hungary? I'm especially interested since I have "Hungarian Greek" ancestry.

Many of them arrived in Hungary at the Greek Civil War as refugees, but in the history they came to Hungary in several waves. For example, Miskolc have a significant post-refugee Greek community.

Also, my Mom had Greek high school classmates, too.

Interesting, thanks for info. My Greek ancestor migrated to Hungary in 19th century though. I read there was significant Greek community in Budapest if I am not mistaken.

Communists, probably Makedonskis "Greeks".

PS.

And it wasn't a 'civil war', the 'civil' implies that both groups fighting belong to the same ethnicity, in the 'Greek civil war' you had the Greeks on one side and the Slavic speakers on the other (and their friends/USSR commiesars) fighting to split the country in half and give it to Yugoslavia and Bulgaria.

There's a difference.

In 1945. and little later during the Greek civil war over 10.000 people from Greece settled in Serbia/Vojvodina. Part of them were Slavic speakers from Aegean, and they are colonized in southern Banat in former German villages. Other part were real Greeks who are colonized in Maglić in Bačka (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maglić,_Serbia). In May 1945. 4650 Greek refugees settled in Maglić. Most of that Greeks left Maglić in 1949. and moved to Vardar Macedonia, only 800 of them stayed. Slavic speaking Aegeans stayed in Banat and today their descendants are serbified or they are part of Macedonian minority in Serbia. Except Slavic Aegeans after WW2 in Banat is also colonized certain number of Slavic Macedonians from Vardar Macedonia.

Something interesting. My grandfather worked in Drvar in (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drvar) in 1960s, and with him worked one Greek. He came to Yugoslavia as communist emigrant with wife and children. My grandpa asked him why did he choose Drvar. He said when he came to Yugoslavia he expressed wish to live in the place without Muslims and where locals are communists, and he got Drvar. Drvar never had Muslim population and mosque and locals were big communists. 100% of Drvar population were Serbs, all surrounding villages are also Serbian. Today Serbs are 85-90% in Drvar.
