View Full Version : Gedmatch results of an Italian from Croatia!

Someone pointed out to me that I match this guy on gedmatch. He has a wikitree and a gedcom with a detailed list of recent ancestors. They are all people with Italian names from Istria and Rijeka. I've never seen a DNA result of any kind of an Italian from Croatia, given how few of them there are.

Either way, this is extremely interesting. In his case, language and ethnicity is in contrast with admixture. I have no idea whether or not that's the case for all Italians from Istria and nearby.

if we consider what we know from history, his result can also be taken as a proof of italianization in those regions.
anyway, very interesting

It could have happened a thousand years ago, it's hard to say. The italianization process likely started after Venice took over the peninsula and surrounding areas.

The strongest culture prevails over genetics. For example: the Jews prevailed over the Philistines, the Spaniards prevailed over the Native Americans, the Germanics over the Celts in England etc.

If we can see more samples it would be helpful. He could be adopted judging from the results.

On gedmatch he doesn't share more than 41 cM with anyone, i. e. he doesn't have any close matches, so there is no way to tell if that's true or not.

If somebody is reading this and has any more kits like this one, feel free to contribute.

No reason to be adopted, results align with history.

Vast majority of Italians from these regions are Italianized Croats.

It could have happened a thousand years ago, it's hard to say. The italianization process likely started after Venice took over the peninsula and surrounding areas.

When I worked on my diploma work it included reading old newspapers and archives from Rijeka in late 19/early 20th century.

Rijeka census in mid 19th century was overwhelmingly Croat with 10-15% Italians (iirc) and some Slovenes. Than 30 years later Italians suddenly made 40-50%.

And there was no massive migration wawe from Italy. At all.

It's a complex socio-economic phenomenom. There were few genuine Italians tho, but very small minority.

Rijeka was never under Venice btw. Mass Italianization in the city was a 19th century phenomenom.

It proves that culture overpowers genetics in some ethnic groups.

Its a Croat Italian mix that pushes into eastern balkan, because you have Slavic base and added more anatolian neolithic admix from Italian, resulting into more what is eastern balkan standard

Very interesting! My great grandma must have plotted like a half Romanian genetically, because she was half Istrian half Trentinese. For some reason autosomally I am very woggy though (I plot with Greek islanders and South Italians), which is strange considering half of my Italian ancestry on paper comes from the North (Istria, Trentino and Emilia Romagna) as well as some Swiss German from Basel.

Funny how he is further away from the North Italian reference than I am

The 1st guy is a pure south slav, while the second may be some mix. I'm closer to northern italians than the 1st guy and I've got more west med than both.

You're 1/4 Han though, that pulls you much to the east.

Of course, I was only talking about my European admixture though.

He can be modeled as a mix of Italian-Friul and Croatian in these proportions (calculated from simulating G25):

0.023 TE9900594 = 74% Croatian + 26% Italian_Northeast
