Bulgaria is popular in Hungary, i have no idea why.

Both have steppic conqueror founders
Both fought on same side in world wars
Both are pretty russophile politically and are in EU
Both are very openly anti migrant and built walls
Both have quiet tough mentality

Even the flags are similar.

Croatia ofc. Serbs are a little too hardcore, but I like that culture too.

Do you think that Croatia is so much liked has also something to do with their tourist attractions and sea?

In order to have a favorite Balkan country (excluding your own, if you are a Balkan country), you must have visited each one of them, got to know the culture, traditions and people above all. Then you can make a ranking

I don't know how it is today with the young generation, but I am from the generation that is already half a century old and I can say why, but as for the generations that lived in the time of communism. The entire socialist camp was on summer and winter holidays in Bulgaria.

Romania is included in the Balkan list, although we're not geographically (except some small areas); still... I do wonder why it is the favorite of the Estonians? :D Not that I'm against it. Just out of curiosity. Same with the Netherlands.

This is probably based on the number of Google searches in each country. Montenegro is a rather obscure country in Portugal, about which people know little or nothing compared to countries like Greece or Croatia. However, it must be a searched country on Google around here because people are curious as to why a Balkan country has a name that at first glance seems to be Portuguese ("Black Mountain"). Either that or because we have a rather prominent MP, leader of the opposition party, who is called Luís Montenegro (mostly known as just Montenegro), and can contribute to the number of Google searches.

So, not only does the country have a name that seems peculiar to us, it is also a surname in Portugal and there are also villages around here that are called Montenegro, all contributing to the number of searches that may be being misinterpreted as searches for the Balkan country.

I agree, but i doubt that Bulgaria is more popular than Croatia. Many hungarian are going to the sea thats why.

Yes but not only, except turn of 19/20th century we had good relationship and that's remarkable considering 900 years of personal Union.
Hungary doesn't have best relations with it's neighbours, Croatia as well, so to each other we seem pretty nice.

Well, just as I thought, at least in the case of Portugal it must be related to the number of Google searches. Montenegro has a stratospheric difference compared to other countries for the reasons I have already stated.

Searches done on google.pt, using the names of each country in the Portuguese language, this is the order you get by number of entries:

Montenegro - 859 000 000
Grécia - 87 900 000
Croácia - 41 600 000
Bulgária - 34 100 000
Sérvia - 31 300 000
Bósnia e Herzegovina - 23 000 000
Albânia - 22 500 000
Macedónia do Norte - 11 500 000
Roménia - 10 900 000
Eslovénia - 10 200 000

Greece and Croatia realistically are the most popular countries actually, unsurprisingly, and it makes more sense than Montenegro.

I doubt it.

UK likes Albania ? Sure I have seen many British people go to Albania and they say they love it so could be believeable indeed but on the other hand Albanians were on UK news frequently as exceptional engineers :D

I know Kosovar Albanian singers like Dua Lipa or Rita Ora are very popular in UK, and maybe they don't know what Kosovo is so they went for Albania.

Yeah, it is possible that is the case too. Some UK politics/politicians so far seem pro-Kosovar compared to even the US.

Yes, me too. It must be because we write Roménia and not Romênia as in Brazil, so entries in Brazilian Portuguese are excluded. Romênia has 19 900 000 entries, so if you were to add them to the entries of Roménia, the total would be 30 800 000.

This map is very inaccurate. Greece is the most liked everywhere in Europe and maybe Croatia in some countries.

most liked =/= most popular

If we were to talk about most popular countries then it would be basically Greece, Croatia and Serbia, also Romania for Moldova ofc.
Since it's about most liked tho then we would have to look up to some symapthy towards countries stats, but it's still not very relatable. The beauty of statistics, you have graphs but also you would have to ask thousands or people when most of them don't see much difference, otherwise it's just an easy number to manipulate

I guess even among groups of people on TA by nationality we would get different results

What is so popular about Serbia which does not even have a coast ? I imagine a country like Albania or Montenegro with coasts and mountains would certainly be more of a popular destination than countries like Macedonia and Serbia. It might not be the case right now but something that is certainly going to change in the future.

Serbia is wild, good food and nightlife, and extrovert.
That is why its liked by turists, they feel things are going to happen there

You can search through Researchgate. There has been no study like this ever conducted. If anyone has a PDF, they are free to send it to me.

It may be different in Europe but here I never see any travel ads or basically anything about Romania. I have never been to any Balkan country but a poster on another forum got me interested in Romania so I read some history and looked at lots of photos/videos. I would love to visit because it has a variety of landscapes and unique regions around the country which smaller countries don't because of their size.
