A study looking at youth employment has found young people make up almost a quarter of Australia's long-term unemployed.

The Foundation for Young Australians has just released its annual How Young People Are Faring report.

The foundation's director of research and evaluation, Dr Lucas Walsh, says full-time job opportunities for teenagers are decreasing.

"In a highly competitive labour market you've got a choice between a younger person, who perhaps is less experienced, as against an older member of the population," he said.

"We really need to be giving these young people a go because what we do for them now will reap benefits for us in the future."

Dr Walsh says since 2008, the percentage of young Australians without a job for a year or longer has almost doubled.

He says it is a disturbing trend.

"We're asking the question, to what extent and how are we preparing young people for this changing world of work?" he said.

"It's about providing pathways from those communities to worlds of work and study. VET and training remain incredibly important."

A greater focus on preparing young people for the workforce was one of the study's key recommendations.
