Sinéad explained her anger with all the child abuse cases in the Catholic Church (of which Sinéad was a victim of child abuse as a child - both from her mother and also from the Catholic church,) and she felt the need to address this issue and speak out against evil. It was a courageous thing to put her career on the line to speak out against child abuse, as her albums were temporarily banned and her CDs were shown being destroyed with steam rollers outside of music stores in the US, and she was unfairly condemned in the media after she bravely spoke out against mass child rapes in the Catholic church and opposed the vatican and pope.

When she ripped up a picture of the pope, the cowardly audience just stayed silent and didn't applaud, causing an awkward and tense atmosphere.

Then about a week of so after she defiantly tore up a photo of the pope on live TV and angrily shouted "fight the real enemy!", Sinéad then performed at a live Bob Dylan tribute concert.... and as she walked onto the stage, half of the audience loudly booed her and the other half loudly applauded her. Sinéad described the atmsophere as an intense clash of good vs evil and opposing forces in the audience.

Sinéad stood in silence on-stage for several minutes as she waited for the loud cacophony of noise from the crowd to calm down. But as the noise continued, she said in interviews that she then thought, "Sod it, I'm not going to sing the song that I was scheduled to sing," and instead requested for her microphone to be turned up in order for her to be heard over the crowd... and then she defiantly and loudly repeated and sang out against child abuse for a minute as half the audience cheered and the other half roared in anger... before she angrily walked off stage and then collapsed into tears.

Her book Rememberings which she wrote herself has been well praised and people that knew her have said she had a fantastic sense of humour and was very entertaining.

I know people with bipolar and some have been very destructive. Some people also have dual issues such as bi-polar and schizophrenia. It's a hard thing for people because there is still some social stigma as well. Some younger people are more open about mental health issues than people were in the past. I know someone I work with who has chronic depression that they have no control over and they miss a lot of time off work. I unfortunately also know people that have committed suicide. Mental health issues can be worse than physical sickness at times because some people are still very judgmental and not very understanding.

More celebrities now are more open about having bipolar. Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Russell Brand and Stephen Fry are some of the ones who have spoken about their bipolar. It's something that people have no control over and it can happen to anyone or a family member.

Sinead suffered abuse from her mother. She did speak out about child abuse in the Catholic Church but she herself was not abused by anyone in the Catholic Church. She did speak out about it before most people did. Unfortunately child abuse is most prolific in people's homes. Sinead did spend time in the Magdalene laundries when she was 15 and while the treatment was harsh and strict she didn't suffer sexual abuse. She herself said her mental health issues stemmed back to the abuse by her mother.
