In light of this, it can be stated that Chuvash are Mari with a Bulgar superstrate, both in language and in genetics, while Tatars and Bashkirs are Bulgars mixed with Finno-Ugric folks and with a Kipchak superstrate in linguistics.

Mitogenomic data indicate admixture components of Central-Inner Asian and Srubnaya origin in the conquering Hungarians (https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0205920)


Our results show that the Conquerors assembled from various nomadic groups of the Eurasian steppe. Population genetic results indicate that they had closest connection to the Onogur-Bulgar ancestors of Volga Tatars. Phylogenetic results reveal that more than one third of the Conqueror maternal lineages were derived from Central-Inner Asia and their most probable ultimate sources were the Asian Scythians and Asian Huns, giving support to the Hungarian Hun tradition. The rest of the lineages most likely originated from the Bronze Age Potapovka-Poltavka-Srubnaya cultures of the Pontic-Caspian steppe. Available data imply that the Conquerors did not have a major contribution to the gene pool of the Carpathian Basin.

Volga Bulgars were one of the few groups which had the same partial horse burial customs [54] and similar grave goods as the Conquerors. Both groups are characterized by similar anthropological types [55], and practiced identical symbolic trepanation customs [56] which is documented with such a high frequency just among the related Danube Bulgars [57]. Historical data link both groups to the Onogurs [58], the Conquerors must have belonged to the Onogur tribal union, as the name “Hungarian” is derived from “Onogur” [5,59].

Taken together the direct genetic relation of the Conquerors to Onogur-Bulgar ancestors of Volga Tatars is very feasible.

Probably a Hunnic line, the possibilty of it's being Bulgar in origin is also possible since the parental haplogroups are found among Karachay-Balkars.

I think that R-YP4768 (paternal clade) was an eastern European Sarmatian/Alan clade that during late Antiquity/early middle-Ages joined one (or more) Turkic confederations like Huns, Khazars, Avars, Bulgars etc or even Goths.

What makes you believe that R-Y86945* is specifically a Bulgar clade and how do you think this is connected to the guy from from Cantabria who is also under this clade?

Probable! But we'd need unmixed samples from that period to determine which steppe folks carried it originally.

The parental haplogroups are found among Europeans (R-YP4768) and Pamiris of China (R-S12099).

It's the other R-F2935 subclade (R-Y37912) that has been found in Balkars which seems generally more "eastern"

Paternal haplo of R-S12099 (R-F2935) is also found among Karachay-Balkars, Azerbaijani Turks and Anatolian Turks, I can't pinpoint the exact origin of this haplo but it's more or less related with the migration of Turks into the West. It could also be from the Sarmatians that got absorbed into the Turkics.

A huge-ass study on Volga/Ural Tatar Y-DNA, almost 2,000 samples tested with FTDNA. It's in Russian. One of the biggest highlights:

- Eastern European haplogroups + Baltic-Slavic-Finnish subclades of N: 30%
- Western European haplogroups: 9%
- Western Asian & Southern European haplogroups: 27%
- Uralic & Siberian haplogroups: 11%
- Asian subclades of West Eurasian haplogroups (e.g. R1a-Z93 and Asian branches of R1b and J2): 13%
- East Asian haplogroups: 9%
