The House of Báthory was an old and powerful Hungarian noble family. The family rose to significant influence in Central Europe during the Late Middle Ages, holding high military, administrative and ecclesiastical positions in the Kingdom of Hungary. In the early modern period, the family produced several Princes of Transylvania and one King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania (Stephen Báthory).

The family belonged to the Gutkeled, a clan of Hungarian nobles, which traced its descent to the Swabian brothers Gut and Kelad, who immigrated into Hungary during the reign of King Peter (reigned 1038–1046).

The Báthory family was one of the most powerful noble families in the medieval Hungarian Kingdom. Their influence peaked during the Ottoman occupation of Hungary, when the only partially autonomous region of the country was Transylvania, under Turkish protectorate. Several members of the family became Princes of Transylvania, and one of them, István Báthory, was also the elected King of Poland. We hereby present the first genetic data about this extinct family. Archaeological excavations in Pericei, a settlement now part of Romania, revealed the former family chapel of the Báthory family. Through this work, two Báthory family members were successfully identified among the 13 skeletons found at the site. The presence of Y chromosome haplogroup R-S498 fits the historical account describing the family’s German (Swabian) origins. Their genomic composition also indicates a family of Germanic origin that intermixed with medieval Hungarians.

Unsurprisingly, the PCA plot shows that Bathorys, like the Transylvanian elite in general, were Hungarian-Romanian mixes. They plot just in-between Hungarians and Romanians, only slightly more Alan than modern Eastern Europeans (the red circles on the PCA).

In terms of Y-DNA haplogroups, they have I2a1b and J2a1, which are rare among Hungarians but common among Romanians, again showing they were mixed. There's also a Q haplogroup sample, which probably traces back to the conquerors, nonetheless the medieval samples are far closer to modern Hungarians and Romanians than to the conquerors.
