Around 150 historians and art experts have signed a petition to stop drilling into Giorgio Vasari's The Battle of Marciano at the Palazzo Vecchio in Firenze.

Researcher Maurizio Seracini believes Leonardo Da Vinci's unfinished fresco, The Battle of Anghiari, lies beneath Vasari's painting, on a second wall. The drilling is to make room for tiny cameras that could confirm whether there is a hidden painting behind Vasari's work.

Seracini believes Vasari did not want to destroy Da Vinci's work and instead bricked it up behind a new wall on which he painted. His theory was stimulated after finding a soldier on Vasari's work holding a small flag bearing the words: "He who seeks, finds" ("Cerva Trova").

The petitioners have asked officials to stop the drilling until other Renaissance art experts are consulted.
