I recently got mine too, and my Mom's.

What did you get for "Periodical Ancient Ancestry Breakdown" at "Middle Ages" and at "no limit" and "Global"? I think that one may be the most accurate for mixed ethnicity. I got a breakdown of 12 different populations. My Mom got 7.

What kind of modeling do you get if you just select English/Irish/French and Ukraine as modern populations?

As your grandma's ancestry is SW Ukraine, I wonder how well it matches to the Ukrainian average, and the possible impacts on your modeling? Also, I think the fact that you share a higher than average cM % with your grandma definitely shows in the modeling presented in the op.

And her mtdna is T2, same than Corvinus, although Corvinus was T2b .

As for most accurate for me though I find it VERY hard to judge with these calculators, I'd have to look at all the breakdowns again lol.

Edit: I took a look and it seems like Iron Age is the most accurate for me.

Hi that's a really good question well as for how close she is to the Ukrainian average, multiple websites I've uploaded to such as Gedmatch and others seem to show that she is a bit atypical for a Ukrainian in terms of genetics, as in her distance to Ukrainians is a at least bit higher than expected in most calculator results. I believe this could be impacting my modeling. Although it might be typical for someone from her area but I'm not completely sure. For example in Eurogenes K13 her closest populations are Croatians followed by Hungarians and not Ukrainians, it seems like she is a bit south shifted compared to what would be expected. But I'm not an expert on this so I'd take what I say with a grain of salt, but I could share examples of what I mean :). It also appears she has a bit of excess Eurasian ancestry as well which appears in some ancestry breakdowns.

And yes I agree I think her contribution does appear to show up strongly in modeling results.

I might actually go ahead and get some IllustrativeDNA for my grandma to help compare and see what it gives her. The G25 coordinates would also be useful to have.

Also adding this in too since Mr G. was interested :) but here is my breakdown with only populations from my most recent known ancestry Ukrainian, British Isles, French etc. I'm gonna first try it with the customizable breakdown.

Doesn't give me any British Isles although I did select it. I decided to try removing Northern French to see what it would give. Interestingly the East European it gives me tends to be Russian.

Yeah honestly I don't believe the matches to those royal ancient samples are actually "real" on there, I think they hype them up lol, I just think they assign them because they look genetically close or have something in common lol. Oh well xD

More like they go so deep and catch tiny pieces of DNA, that we probably all share with them :D

Modeling is a little all over the place, but that is typical as the directive of the algorithm is to get the tightest fit possible with the available source. Her position on pca is as expected. I suppose additional Paleo Balkanic ancestry is what separates her from the Ukraine average.

I was gonna say is anyone else disappointed that the hyped up new calculator feature on Illus is locked behind a monthly paywall? I'm not happy especially considering how expensive the kits were already especially with the Euro to CAD conversion rate as well. Now I feel like Illus in the future will only put new features behind extra paywalls.....I still like the site but I'm kind of bummed.

I don't really care for the subscription. I would have liked it to be a one-time purchase sort of thing. It's not just any old calculator. qpAdm is the academic gold standard. And the programmers put in a good amount of work making it super user friendly. I have run a ton of models already so it's worth it to me.

You do raise a valid concern. I can see it now. Eventually IllustrativeDNA may implement qpwave, another academic tool that population geneticists use. And likely it will not be free.

There are some things I'd like to see fixed. As it is right now, I cannot use my merged DNA file. And a couple samples are missing in the datasets I see them adding in the future like Takarkori and NUE001.
