in recent years DNA analysis has shown there are actually only two sub-species of tiger

mainland tigers are one sub-species (Bengal, Siberian, Indochina, South China, Caspian)
island tigers are the other (Sumatran, Java, Bali)

Yes indeed...which makes this find a little less significant, I guess. Because there are still a fair amount of Sumatra tigers around, even though they're not nearly as common as the Bengal tigers.
