Christopher Hitchens, a Washington, D.C.-based author, essayist and polemicist who waged verbal and occasional physical battle on behalf of causes left and right, died Thursday night at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston of complications from a long illness, according to a statement from Vanity Fair magazine.

"There will never be another like Christopher. A man of ferocious intellect, who was as vibrant on the page as he was at the bar," said Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter. "Those who read him felt they knew him, and those who knew him were profoundly fortunate souls."

As an agnostic, I had no respect for him. Debating the existence of God is a futile endeavor, and those who spend so much type ridiculing people who do believe are doing nothing productive, they're just cruel trolls trying to upset others. Religion is based on faith. The existence of God cannot be proven or disproven because such a being would be beyond our understanding. Applying our human logic to a being so vastly superior to us is foolish. We could no more explain or understand the existence of a God anymore than an amoeba could understand us.
