He's from Pittsburgh, so he is probably rather predominantly German.

Yes and no. Untill around ~1300-1500 there were many names around in the latin form (1st and surname). In fact i had some names shifting 3 times in my own family tree from old german to latin version to german and back and forth. I guess it had to fit the preferences of the actual local leader. I assmue after the inquisition, lutherism and all that stuff latin names went out of fashion. Also in 1800's german national feelings came up and most of the names were finally germanized. So from Fabianus / Fabius to Fabian. Arminius / Armin -> Hermann, Henrici -> Heinrich and so on. But i don't know if the spanish version is totally indipendend or kinda related with the germanized one: Fabian-Fabián?!?

Btw: There is also a Bundesliga player named Patrick Fabian. He plays for Bochum...Stadium is 8Km away from my location.

From what i extract from here, he might be 50% German, 25% Slovak, 25% English. I think the "paper ethnicity" and Phenotype fits pretty well together.
Not uncommon face in my region.
