View Full Version : I have a rare genetic variation that reduces body odor (very rare in Caucasians)

https://www.geneticlifehacks.com/ear-wax-and-body-odor-its-genetic/
This concerns the SNP Rs17822931
To summarize:
CC = Present in 80% of Caucasians, 98% of sub-Saharans = wet earwax + existing body odor
TT = Present in 80% of East Asians = dry earwax + no body odor
CT = Intermediate between the two
If Asians don't stink when they sweat, it's only because their sweat contains water + sodium chloride (CC allele).
Whereas the rest of the population's sweat contains water + sodium chloride + lipids (TT allele).
When bacteria present on the surface of our skin come into contact with lipids, the result is an odor.
Personally, with my "CT" variation, I've always noticed that I have less body odor.
I should point out that I'm not of Asian descent.

It’s not rare among Europeans. The allele frequency among non-Finnish Europeans according to gnomAD v4.1.0 is 0.1278. This means your genotype should be just over 20% in the general European population based on Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Just because a variant is most frequent in East Asia does not mean it is particularly uncommon in other populations.

I know now why ya all smell funny. 2% of Europeans are TT, 98% of Africans are CC. Connect the dots.
Must be those 5-15% Baltic i always score, and we all know deep down 10% Baltic = 10% Ping pong. Finns are up to 20% C/T.
You shouldn't be reading this thread right now, you should be taking a shower.

Your known ancestry is all from Rhône-Alpes, correct? I know you live in Côte d'Azur but given the Lyon flag I'm not sure if your ancestry is from elsewhere.

If people were not as African admixed, we could save a lot of water and the planet, instead of taking 3 showers a day so you don't smell like a bunch of beavers.

C/T
Excluding hygiene and some health conditions like diabetes, body odor is strongly related with testosterone levels in men.
The higher the T - the more you'll reek.
Genetic factors can play a role in the type and amount of sweat produced, which in turn affects body odor. But that's pretty much it, with high T levels you'll still stink like a pig no matter what.

Seriously that's probably something that was always present in Europeans at very low frequency. I ve often used deodorants, at least where it's supposed to be mandatory like at the gym, i ve just never really noticed a difference (but on other people, yes!)
It's not like we wouldn't have a scent either i think, i remember a few gf who were obsessed with wearing my sweaters and shirts.

Some years ago I was following a white American couple living in Korea, they posted videos on Youtube. They complained that they couldn't buy deodorants / antiperspirants anywhere in Korea. They just couldn't find such products in any store, because there's no demand for them in Korea.

God knows why, they all stink of garlic half the time (orientals generally, not just Koreans). Maybe they don't have a sense of smell either.

Apart from the few Asians in Europe who often work in restaurants so they obviously are going to smell that, In Korea and Japan i noticed the urban people had a very neutral scent, i don't think there is this culture to wear perfumes either. You don't regularly pass by people like in Europe/US who reek of a smell or too much perfume, where as you can detect blacks from several meters away. All this makes more sense now.
Nature created the culture there again.

Earlier I also used deodorants, because everybody does, but somewhen I recognized I don't need them and just stopped.
Yes, there's some scent, but it's different, it never becomes really pungent.

Agreed. I've had plenty of contact with Asian of different ethnicities and some are absolute stinkers.
On topic, CC. If you go bush with me, I won't complain about the stink. You can swim and hide the smell behind wood smoke.

I've never had any problems with orientals personally apart from the smell, it can be pungent. I used to feel like retching every time I had to take the bus from Box Hill (basically Chinatown).

Moderately wet earwax, moderate body odor.
rs6058017 (ASIP) : AA
No significant effect on body odor.
rs4541 (CYP11B1) : GG
Normal production of steroid metabolites in sweat, no major effect on odor.
rs16891982 (SLC45A2) : CG
Intermediate skin pigmentation, may slightly influence sweat chemistry.
rs104893933, rs3135000, rs10424065 (Not found)
No data available for these SNPs.
rs3759129 (ABCC11) : AA
Normal production of odor molecules in sweat.
rs104894229 (ABCC11) : CC
Normal production of odor molecules in sweat.
rs6119471 (ASIP) : CC
No significant effect on body odor.
rs1426654 (SLC24A5) : AA
Lighter skin pigmentation, minimal influence on body odor.
rs1042602 (TYR) : CC
Normal melanin production, no notable effect on body odor.
rs1805007 (MC1R) : CC
Normal pigmentation, no effect on body odor.
rs2228479 (MC1R) : GG
Normal pigmentation, no direct impact on body odor.
Overall Summary:
Your results suggest moderate to low body odor, with genetic variations mainly influencing skin pigmentation and the production of molecules in sweat. No major factors seem to significantly increase body odor."
