The model is not perfect and the G25 tool has its limitations, for example:
Three Merovingian samples from Belgium/Netherlands that are predicted to be 100% Gaulish get +80% continental Gaulish (this category includes samples that have local diversity, like modern ethnic French, so some are more French EEF like imput -more WHG also-, others more French Beaker like imput, others are intermediate -and this intermediate often represents the average French profile from Central France).

This makes me put the North African percentages into perspective: the three Merovingian samples get them on this model while they have none at all on the study model.
This does not mean that none of these modern French samples have neither Roman contribution from the empire nor North African contribution, but it could be less or insignificant.

The model is not perfect and the G25 tool has its limitations, for example:
Three Merovingian samples from Belgium/Netherlands that are predicted to be 100% Gaulish get +80% continental Gaulish (this category includes samples that have local diversity, like modern ethnic French, so some are more French EEF like imput -more WHG also-, others more French Beaker like imput, others are intermediate -and this intermediate often represents the average French profile from Central France).

This makes me put the North African percentages into perspective: the three Merovingian samples get them on this model while they have none at all on the study model.
This does not mean that none of these modern French samples have neither Roman contribution from the empire nor North African contribution, but it could be less or insignificant.

The model is not perfect and the G25 tool has its limitations, for example:
Three Merovingian samples from Belgium/Netherlands that are predicted to be 100% Gaulish get +80% continental Gaulish (this category includes samples that have local diversity, like modern ethnic French, so some are more French EEF like imput -more WHG also-, others more French Beaker like imput, others are intermediate -and this intermediate often represents the average French profile from Central France).

This makes me put the North African percentages into perspective: the three Merovingian samples get them on this model while they have none at all on the study model.
This does not mean that none of these modern French samples have neither Roman contribution from the empire nor North African contribution, but it could be less or insignificant.

We found substantial France IA ancestry only in England, but not in Wales, Scotland or Ireland, following an east-to-west cline in Britain (Pearson’s |r| > 0.86), accounting for as much as 43% of the ancestry in East Anglia (Fig. 5d). Very similar results were produced using LowerSaxony EMA as a source for CNE ancestry (Extended Data Fig. 8b). One potential caveat in this analysis is our relatively sparse Roman sample from England, where we particularly lack samples from the south, which might have pre-existing France IA-related ancestry. We, therefore, turned to one of our early medieval sites, the post-Roman cemetery of Worth Matravers at the southern coast of Dorset, whose individuals have nearly no CNE ancestry (less than 6% on average), and thus may serve as a more temporally close proxy for post-Roman Britain before the arrival of CNEs. When used as a source in our model, we found that the estimates of France IA-related ancestry in present-day England changed by less than 3% on average across the regions (Fig. 5b), suggesting that France IA-related ancestry entered England to a substantial amount after the Roman period. We note that a model involving southern or western European-like ancestry in England has been previously proposed36 on the basis of present-day samples, but we can now go further and delineate this third component more clearly against the CNE-like immigrant gene pool making up the majority of the early medieval individuals from England that we studied.

Our three-way population model for present-day England supports a view of post-Roman English genetic history as punctuated by gene flow processes from at least two major sources: first, the attested arrival of CNE ancestry during the Early Middle Ages from northern Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark, and second, the arrival of ancestry related to France IA. Although we cannot precisely date the order of those arrivals, at least substantial amounts of France IA-related ancestry seem to be absent in northern and eastern England during the Early Middle Ages and therefore must have arrived there subsequently. In other parts of England, however, it may have entered together with CNE ancestry or even earlier. Notably in southern England, namely, Eastry, Apple Down and Rookery Hill, several early medieval individuals already exhibit France IA-related ancestry, which probably results, at least in part, from localized mobility between the south of England and the Frankish areas of Europe during the Early Middle Ages (Extended Data Fig. 8a). Indeed, Frankish material culture is evident in these regions, particularly in Kent and Sussex58,59,60. Admixture from this second source is, therefore, unlikely to have resulted from a single discrete wave. More plausibly, it resulted from pulses of immigration or continuous gene flow between eastern England and its neighbouring regions.

Because some Gaulish samples have a high rate of WHG and a little less of Steppe, which pulls them towards the Iron Age Iberians, without having contributions from the Iberian Iron Age.

If we keep only the Gaulish samples with a high rate of Steppe contribution, we ignore the local diversity of the French of the Iron Age and we could end up with Northern French who have 30% Germanic + 10-20% Iberian and deflate the Gaulish %.

Also modern Spaniard are differents kind of admix, also French-IA admix and Iberia IA admix and Imperial rome and more "Ibero-Berbers" admix.
Modern Spaniards are a mix of differents middle age spaniards, some with more Iberia IA like, some with more French IA like, some with more "berber like" and some with more imperial rome like.

Different French samples descend from different Gauls of the Iron Age but not from all Gauls.
My father probably descends from Gauls from the north of France but not from those from the center
Some Gaulish samples from the center east of France also have a lot of WHG, even some from the North. EEF from France have a lot of WHG (15-25%).
My father is slighty shifted toward the Basque, not because of spaniard admix but because of this familial history, genetic history.
Some Northern French Gaulish have more extra corded/beaker like, other more EEF French like (with more WHG also), some are more intermediate.
My father is a more Northern French with a little bit more EEF French (with the typical "more whg" signature).

The problem with the G25 is we can not know if a model "pass" or not. The close or far distance is not very reliable.

But in general it can give an overview, I took the example of the three merovingian samples which have 100% Gaulish on the qpadm but obtain +80% on the g25 model that I shared, so it is not that far away.

It also depends on the samples next door that can absorb the Gallic continental part or iberian part.

We can reproduce sometime a qpadm model on the g25 and we could obtain close results (+80% instead of 100%) but we would have to have the same strict samples as those used on the qpadm
But honestly I have already tried to do it and sometimes it does not work at all: we end up with totally different percentages, for different contributions.
Sometimes it works (by chance?) and sometimes not.

If a modern Spaniard from Cataluna is like 40% French IA like + 50% Iberian IA like + 10% Roman Imperial like + 10% Berber like, some continental gaulois (and not even from the south but also from the north and central and east) could absord the iberian IA part.

You need a tool like qpadm to know if the model pass or not, to model correctly a modern catalan.
We don't even know what is the french IA like level among ethnic modern Catalans from the differents area of Cataluna...

Because some Gaulish samples have a high rate of WHG and a little less of Steppe, which pulls them towards the Iron Age Iberians, without having contributions from the Iberian Iron Age.

If we keep only the Gaulish samples with a high rate of Steppe contribution, we ignore the local diversity of the French of the Iron Age and we could end up with Northern French who have 30% Germanic + 10-20% Iberian and deflate the Gaulish %.

Also modern Spaniard are differents kind of admix, also French-IA admix and Iberia IA admix and Imperial rome and more "Ibero-Berbers" admix.
Modern Spaniards are a mix of differents middle age spaniards, some with more Iberia IA like, some with more French IA like, some with more "berber like" and some with more imperial rome like.

Different French samples descend from different Gauls of the Iron Age but not from all Gauls.
My father probably descends from Gauls from the north of France but not from those from the center
Some Gaulish samples from the center east of France also have a lot of WHG, even some from the North. EEF from France have a lot of WHG (15-25%).
My father is slighty shifted toward the Basque, not because of spaniard admix but because of this familial history, genetic history.
Some Northern French Gaulish have more extra corded/beaker like, other more EEF French like (with more WHG also), some are more intermediate.
My father is a more Northern French with a little bit more EEF French (with the typical "more whg" signature).

The problem with the G25 is we can not know if a model "pass" or not. The close or far distance is not very reliable.

But in general it can give an overview, I took the example of the three merovingian samples which have 100% Gaulish on the qpadm but obtain +80% on the g25 model that I shared, so it is not that far away.

It also depends on the samples next door that can absorb the Gallic continental part or iberian part.

We can reproduce sometime a qpadm model on the g25 and we could obtain close results (+80% instead of 100%) but we would have to have the same strict samples as those used on the qpadm
But honestly I have already tried to do it and sometimes it does not work at all: we end up with totally different percentages, for different contributions.
Sometimes it works (by chance?) and sometimes not.

If a modern Spaniard from Cataluna is like 40% French IA like + 50% Iberian IA like + 10% Roman Imperial like + 10% Berber like, some continental gaulois (and not even from the south but also from the north and central and east) could absord the iberian IA part.

You need a tool like qpadm to know if the model pass or not, to model correctly a modern catalan.
We don't even know what is the french IA like level among ethnic modern Catalans from the differents area of Cataluna...

Surely the apparent 'French' component within the English genome can be linked to this, in that there was no actual seismic migration from (northern) France in the middle ages and instead this component permeates in the English because of how much more isolated Ireland/Scotland/Wales are (with England being that bit closer to the European continent). Think about it, Ireland literally sits out on the Atlantic and whilst Wales and Scotland both accompany England on the island of Britannia, the vast majority of their land is upland terrain (a stark contrast to the fertile lowlands that define the majority of the English landscape).

They (probably/maybe) wouldn't score gaul, because they were already mixed with Celts, coming either directly from the Hallstatt culture or, indirectly through La Tene or later cultures, so using a BA population for them would be more accurate, at least that's what I think.

I was thinking actually of a larger territory than just the Aquitani tribe location where they would be largely Basque on both sides of the Pyrénées. Something closer to this:

But yes there is a bias due to being the only thing proposed in the model as well for Iberians. Like for the Finn IA as "Germanic" seems like asking for troubles. Im alternatively 75% Gaul or only 33% based on what the Germanic sample is (Denmark or Finn)

With 15% of WHG and only 30% of steppic and 55% barcin , you are alreay close to some central french and many gaulish samples from differents area.

But seriously, do we think the Brythonic populations in what is now modern-day England and Wales (and Scotland; Picts are basically northern-shifted Britons and even they only concerned those in the northern part of Scotland) would be virtually identical to one another, concerning not only culture but also genetics? Wales isn’t exactly the Alps, but it’s coarse, upland landscape forms enough of a barrier that would have ensured some form of cultural/genetic drift from the (English) lowlands.
On the other hand there is far more genetic overlap between the English and Welsh, compared to the English and northern French (and on the 2022 study it highlights how the Bryrhonic and ‘Iron Age’ French elements are practically neck-and-neck %-wise within the English genome). In that this all signifies that the Britons of England were more ‘continental’ shifted than their Welsh/Scottish counterparts, a reason why that ‘Iron Age’ element appears. However, at this point I am probably repeating myself a wee bit, haha.

I agree that the Celtic Britons of England (particularly Southern England) were already different and more continental shifted than those of Wales and Scotland, and that has already been alluded to in other papers; it can also be seen in Davidski's Celtic vs Germanic PCA and G25. I don't think it's coincidence that you have Julius Caesar's account of the notable difference between Southern 'Maritime' Britons and 'Interior' Britons, the first being said to descend from Gauls across the channel whose customs they mirrored, the latter being said to be the true natives and more uncultivated.

That account lines up with a genetic map of Early Medieval English cemeteries, showing significant France IA blood in the South but none in the North.
