The study titled "Disparate demographic impacts of the Roman Colonization and the Migration Period in the Iberian Peninsula" explores the genetic transformations of the Iberian Peninsula during the Roman period (roughly 100 BCE to 800 CE) and its subsequent Germanic migrations. The research leverages genome-wide data from 248 ancient individuals excavated from 36 archaeological sites across different regions of Iberia to assess how Roman colonization and later Germanic influence reshaped the peninsula's demographic landscape.

Purpose of the Study
The study investigates two distinct historical phases: the Roman era, which brought political and cultural changes, and the Migration Period, marked by the arrival of Germanic tribes. The research focuses on uncovering the demographic impacts of these periods, particularly how migration affected genetic diversity, population structure, and continuity in the Iberian Peninsula.

Data and Methods
Researchers generated genomic data from ancient individuals, combining them with previously published data to conduct a comprehensive analysis of genetic changes. They employed advanced techniques like in-solution hybridization enrichment and principal component analysis (PCA) to analyze patterns of genetic variability across West Eurasia. The samples span multiple centuries and represent different cultural contexts (urban, rural, Hispano-Roman, and Germanic) from the Roman period and beyond.

Findings: Roman Period
1. Dramatic Genetic Transformation: The study found that the Roman period significantly transformed the Iberian population. Many individuals displayed a mix of ancestry, with strong influences from the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa. This was particularly evident in central and southern Iberia, where Roman settlements were widespread.

2. Eastern Mediterranean and North African Ancestry: Genetic evidence points to substantial influxes from the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa, particularly during the Roman era. Ancestry analysis shows that this was not confined to one location but widespread across Iberia, including coastal and inland sites.
- Eastern Mediterranean Ancestry: This was prevalent in the Roman period, likely linked to Roman and Byzantine migrations. The genetic signatures are similar to those found in Italy and the Balkans.
- North African Ancestry: A significant number of individuals carried North African ancestry, indicating migration across the Strait of Gibraltar. This was most prominent in southern and southeastern Iberia but was detected throughout the peninsula.

3. Heterogeneity: The Roman period also introduced a high level of genetic diversity, contrasting with the more homogenous populations of the Iberian Iron Age. The researchers found that individuals from the Roman period had ancestry from various Mediterranean regions, creating a cosmopolitan society.

Findings: Migration Period (Germanic Influence)
1. Limited Impact of Germanic Migrations: The arrival of Germanic groups (such as the Suebi, Vandals, Visigoths, and Alans) beginning in the 5th century CE did not drastically change the genetic makeup of the Iberian Peninsula. Although individuals with Central-Northern European ancestry were found at sites associated with Germanic influence, they were few, and the overall impact was limited compared to the Roman era.

2. Localized Germanic Influence: The Germanic genetic signatures were found primarily in isolated contexts, such as burials associated with Germanic-style artifacts. The researchers identified individuals with Germanic ancestry at specific sites but concluded that these populations gradually mixed with the local Hispano-Roman population, rather than replacing them.

3. Elite Replacement Hypothesis: The study suggests that Germanic migrations were more likely an "elite replacement" rather than large-scale population displacement. This is evidenced by the limited number of individuals with full Germanic ancestry and the continued presence of the local population’s genetic signatures.

4. Continuity and Mixing: Even after the Germanic migrations, the genetic diversity introduced during the Roman period persisted. There was evidence of mixing between local Iberian populations and the newly arrived Germanic groups. Notably, individuals with Germanic ancestry often displayed admixture with the Iberian population.

Unique Findings
1. Siblings Separated by 700 km: An intriguing discovery was a pair of siblings buried approximately 700 kilometers apart, highlighting the mobility of certain groups during the Migration Period. This represents one of the largest known geographic separations between first-degree relatives in ancient genomic studies.

2. Long-Lasting Impact of Roman Rule: The study emphasizes that Roman colonization had a far more significant demographic impact than the Germanic migrations. The influx of Eastern Mediterranean and North African ancestry during the Roman period reshaped the genetic landscape of the Iberian Peninsula, effects that persisted into the later centuries.

Comparative Insights
The researchers draw comparisons between the demographic changes in Iberia and those in other parts of the Roman Empire. In contrast to regions like Britain and the central Mediterranean, where the Migration Period led to significant population changes, the Iberian Peninsula exhibited remarkable continuity with its Roman past. This highlights the unique nature of Iberian history, shaped more profoundly by Roman colonization than by the later migrations.

Conclusions
The study concludes that the Roman colonization introduced significant genetic diversity into the Iberian Peninsula, primarily from the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa, which profoundly reshaped the region's population. In contrast, the later Germanic migrations had a more localized and less impactful demographic influence, characterized by elite integration rather than widespread population replacement. The findings contrast with other regions of the Roman Empire, where the Migration Period had more substantial effects.

Future Research
The authors call for further genetic studies, particularly on the interactions between Iberia and North Africa, to better understand the bidirectional flows during the Roman and post-Roman periods. Additionally, they suggest investigating deeper layers of Iberian history, including the influence of the later Islamic conquests and the Reconquista.

This research offers a comprehensive view of the demographic changes in Iberia, shedding light on the complex population dynamics during two pivotal historical periods.

1. Archaeological Overview
The study provides an overview of key archaeological sites across different regions in the Iberian Peninsula. For each site, it details the settlement history, excavation background, geographic information, and a summary of sampled materials (primarily skeletal remains). This part of the study contributes to understanding how various human populations lived and were buried during Roman and post-Roman times. Some key archaeological sites covered include:
- Almería: Villaricos: A site with a long history from Phoenician-Punic times to the Arab-Andalusian period. This section describes poorly documented excavations with limited skeletal information but provides dating and ancestry insights for specific graves.
- Barcelona: Castellar del Vallès: This site has evidence from the Neolithic to the Iron Age and Late Roman periods, with skeletal remains studied for isotopic and genetic analysis. The cemetery shows burials from the early medieval period.
- Cova Simanya Gran (Sant Llorenç del Munt): Describes karstic cave burials from the Middle Paleolithic to the 5th century CE, focusing on disarticulated human remains likely impacted by water flows within the cave system.

2. Radiocarbon Dating and Genetic Sampling
The study presents direct AMS radiocarbon dates for skeletal remains from the graves. It applies ancient DNA techniques to retrieve genetic data, using this information to understand ancestry contributions from different regions such as:
- Iberian Iron Age (IA)
- West Anatolian Roman-Byzantine populations
- North African Punic populations.

The individuals from the Roman to Late Antiquity periods show varying degrees of these ancestral mixes, reflecting the impact of Roman colonization and later migrations.

3. Genomic Analysis
This part of the study includes bioinformatic processing of the ancient DNA data, focusing on specific markers such as uniparental markers, kinship analysis, and other genetic features like aneuploidies. The genetic makeup of individuals from various archaeological sites demonstrates the blending of Iberian, Mediterranean, and North African lineages during and after Roman rule.

4. Paleo-diet and Isotope Analysis
The stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen ratios from the skeletal remains reveals details about the diet of the populations. Most individuals consumed C3 plants (likely grains and vegetables), with some evidence of C4 crops, moderate to high animal protein intake, and occasional consumption of aquatic resources. This dietary information helps reconstruct the lifestyle and subsistence strategies of Roman and post-Roman communities.

5. Ancestry and Demographic Insights
The genomic data highlights a pattern of continuity and change in the population structure during the Roman and Migration periods in the Iberian Peninsula. Roman colonization brought new genetic influxes, particularly from the eastern Mediterranean (Anatolia), while North African ancestry is present in later periods, coinciding with the arrival of groups from that region.

6. Cultural and Social Context
In addition to genetic data, the document contextualizes these findings within the broader framework of historical changes. It discusses shifts in burial practices, as seen in sites like the necropolis in Lucena, which evolved through Constantinian, Byzantine, and Mozarabic periods before being abandoned in the 8th century. The social implications of these demographic shifts are considered, especially in terms of ethnic and cultural diversity in post-Roman Iberia.

Lolz... Punic would be Levant + North Africans (Berbers). This guy's standard is 'whatever I like is true and what I don't like is not true.'

Absolutely mental...

No G25 coordinates related to this paper yet?

Como ejemplo, en esta fotografía hay 250 personas, para la forja de un Imperio es poquilla cosa... tienen que seguir rebuscando y desenterrando.

Lol But apparently these immigrants would have very little from North Africa and more from the Levant.

Jamás podrás ser como yo y eso te perturba.

if it was the case they had levant ancestry then it would be far more common for people like myself to score levantine proxy's with iberomaurasian. Instead I just get iberomaurasian suggesting, at least in my case, it is just berber influence.

There is a visigoth-mozarab with R-Z225 found in this paper.

I saw it yesterday appeared on Spanish websites.

They must have been Punic rather than Berber savages.

this map below was actually correct , they analyzed Central Spain , South Spain and CentralEast Spain and germanic impact in these areas was really zero , as i thought Roman period in these regions had a lot of genetic impact , highest R-U152 come from south iberia

Interesting. That would make me triple an immigrant: Cisalpine Gaul => Iberia/Canaries => Hispaniola

I will wait to see how modern and direct descendants of the haplogroups found there appear.

In any case, it still seems to me a very limited number to draw conclusions and a greater number of fossils analyzed is needed to draw conclusions.

I too get in G25 the misnamed iberomaurisian and in Gedmatch I have no snp shared with any of the Tarofalt samples.

Curiously, there is a Slavic impact (perhaps not Germanic), which comes from the first Halsttat, in Astures (note the capital Asturica Augusta), and in the Cantabri.

134112

The Astures may have been part of the early Hallstatt expansion that left the Bavarian-Bohemian homeland and migrated into Gaul, some continuing over the mountains into Spain and Portugal.[5] By the 6th century BC, they occupied castros (hillforts), such as Coanna and Mohias near Navia on the coast of the Bay of Biscay.[5] From the Roman point-of-view, expressed in the brief remarks of the historians Florus, epitomising Livy, and Orosius [citation needed], the Astures were divided into two factions, following the natural division made by the alpine karst mountains of the Picos de Europa range: the Transmontani (located in the modern Asturias, "beyond"— that is, north of— the Picos de Europa) and Cismontani (located on the "near" side, in the modern area of León). The Transmontani, placed between the Navia River and the central massif of the Picos de Europa, comprised the Iburri, Luggones, Paesici, Paenii, Saelini, Vinciani, Viromenici and Baedunienses; the Cismontani included the Amaci [es], Cabruagenigi, Lancienses, Lougei, Tiburi, Brigaecini, Orniaci, Superatii, Gigurri, Zoelae and Susarri (which dwelled around Asturica Augusta, in the Astura river valley, and was the main Astur town in Roman times). Prior to the Roman conquest in the late 1st century BC, they were united into a tribal federation with the mountain-top citadel of Asturica (Astorga) as their capital.

I believe that Germanic genetics have existed in the Canary Islands since before the Germans existed.

134113

CANARID

Description:

Maghrebi type with similarities to Cromagnids and North Europeans - probably in part a result of convergent evolution of pre-Neolithic North Africans adapting to cloudy mountain regions, and partially of prehistoric migrations from Europe. Historically in some areas of the Canary Islands, especially in Gomera, Tenerife (Guanches), and Gran Canaria, heavily mixed on the islands today. Also in Berbers (Riffians, Kabyles), Tunisians, and Western Libya (Giado, Nalut).

Physical Traits:

Fair skin, wavy reddish, brown or blonde hair. Mixed eyes. Tall, mesoskelic, ectomorph to mesomorph. Mesocephalic, chamae- orthocranic, relatively large-headed. Mildly leptorrhine. Face broad, sometimes a bit low, large jaw, significant supraorbital arches, occasional mild prognathy, occiput round. Body hair modest.
Literature:
Named Canarid by Lundman (1943), a Paleo Atlantid subvariety (c.p. Lundman, 1951). Hooton (1925) defined it as the Guanche type, Coon (1939) as part of Brünn, Eickstedt (1934) part of Dalic. Peters (1940), Fischer (1943) and Schwidetzky (1963) as Cromagnid, Briggs (1955) as Type D. Heberer et al. (1969) and Knussmann (1996) later united it with Berberid. Michalski's (1964) Riffian is similar. Genetically, Guanches and Berbers are linked (Pino-Yanes et al. 2011).

R1b1b2 and I* are very common in lineages in Europe, and their moderate frequency among the examined Guanche males was suggested to have been a result of prehistoric gene flow from Europe into the region across the Mediterranean. It was found that Guanche males contributed less to the gene pool of modern Canary Islanders than Guanche females (as would be expected from the extremely bloody conquest of the islands). Haplogroups typical among the Guanche have been found at high frequencies in Latin America, suggesting that descendants of the Guanche played an active role in the Spanish colonization of the Americas.

too interesting , i noticed some iberian samples was pulling a little bit of slavic and another ones no , so i thought could be just a noise but sometimes i think no , one time i asked gixajo about it
