Medieval genomes from eastern Iberia illuminate the role of Morisco mass deportations in dismantling a long-standing genetic bridge with North Africa

The paper explores the genetic history of eastern Iberia during the medieval period, with a focus on the impact of Islamic rule, the subsequent Christian reconquest, and the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609 CE. The researchers used ancient DNA (aDNA) from 12 individuals across a span of 1,000 years, uncovering the genetic diversity and admixture in the region, particularly between Iberians and North Africans.

1. Pre-Islamic Gene Flow:
The study found evidence of sporadic North African ancestry in pre-Islamic Iberia. This indicates that gene flow from North Africa into eastern Iberia occurred even before the Islamic conquest. For instance, the DNA of a Roman-era individual (GOG50) from Valencia revealed a mix of Iberian and Mediterranean ancestry, with some North African contributions.

2. North African Ancestry Intensifies During Islamic Rule:
During the Islamic period (711-1492 CE), North African ancestry became more consolidated in the population. The five Islamic-period individuals in the study showed significant North African-related genetic signals. This reflects the arrival of Berber groups and other North Africans into Iberia during the time of Al-Andalus.

3. Early Islamic Burial:
One of the earliest Islamic burials in Iberia (GOG23), dated between 706-888 CE, had an unusually high degree of inbreeding and the strongest North African ancestry (~31%). This individual likely lived during the first generations after the Islamic conquest, indicating that the early Muslim settlers included people of North African descent.

4. Survival of North African Ancestry After Christian Reconquest:
Even after the Christian reconquest of Iberia, which was completed by 1492, North African ancestry persisted in the population. DNA from two individuals buried in a Christian cemetery in Valencia (GOG56 and GOG57, from the 14th–15th centuries) shows similar levels of North African-related ancestry as their Islamic predecessors. This suggests that people with North African ancestry, likely including Moriscos (Muslims who converted to Christianity), remained in the region despite changes in political and religious power.

5. Impact of Morisco Expulsions:
The expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609 CE had a significant genetic impact. The study suggests that this event dismantled a long-standing genetic bridge between Iberia and North Africa. A post-medieval individual (GOG60) from the 17th century lacks North African ancestry, contrasting with the earlier medieval individuals. This shift marks the genetic effects of the Morisco expulsion, which led to a population replacement by northern Iberian settlers with less North African ancestry.

6. Slave Trade and North African Ancestry:
One individual (GOG59), found with shackles around his leg, was identified as likely being of Berber origin, indicating the presence of North African slaves in Iberia during the late medieval period. This aligns with historical records of slave raids and trafficking from North Africa during the Christian period.

7. Inbreeding and Population Structure:
The study also found that individuals from the Islamic period showed varying levels of inbreeding. For example, GOG23, the early Islamic individual, had high levels of inbreeding, possibly reflecting a small, isolated early Muslim community in eastern Iberia. However, as time progressed, the population became less isolated and more genetically diverse, except for certain individuals like GOG59, who was an enslaved person with strong North African links.

It is deeply concerning that geneticists, who are expected to be well-versed in population genetics and capable of performing their work competently, lack the basic understanding to recognize that modeling both modern and ancient populations using only WHG, CHG, Natufian, and Iberomaurusian ancestry is fundamentally flawed. I sincerely hope this paper does not pass peer review in its current state.

Was just about to post this. Why would they use Natufian rather than ANF? And no Steppe? IIRC, it seems like there was less mixing between Muslims and Christians in Sicily (https://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?386317-DNA-analysis-of-skeletal-remains-shows-genetic-discontinuity-in-a-Medieval-Sicilian-community) than in this part of Spain?

In the case of Sicily, our knowledge remains limited; the DNA samples analyzed are few, and all originate from after the period of Muslim domination. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the 'Christians' in Sicily during this time were likely individuals brought over from the southern mainland of Italy by the Normans. Additionally, it is probable that the Christians during the Muslim period already possessed a significant amount of North African DNA, which they may have carried since the Roman era, similar to the situation in Iberia.

However, despite what is documented in academic literature, I doubt that Christians and Muslims intermixed extensively. Even today, in countries such as Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Egypt, Christians represent a distinct and separate ethnic and genetic group from the surrounding Muslim populations. This suggests that there has indeed been some gene flow between Muslims and Christians, but it appears to have been limited.

Not suggesting there was a lot, if any, mixing going on (dai, I'm smarter than that lol). I just noticed that the authors of this study seem to imply there was some sort of mixing, limited as it was, going on (point 4 in the OP), while the Sicilian study suggested the two communities remained separate, which definitely makes sense. And of course, the little NA in Sicily and Iberia is much, much older than the Middle Ages.

Muladi repopulation of Ibero-Berbers who escaped from the feudalism of Al-Andalus

Turienzo relates that from the last third of the 9th century, some very large and compact groups of Muladi population settled in León and acted as settlers, actively supporting the Leonese kings in all their undertakings. "They were splendidly welcomed by Alfonso III, who gave them a personal and collective status that was extremely favourable and socially more advanced than that granted by the Muslim legislation dominated by the Umayyads," he says. The researcher emphasises that they not only had complete equality of rights with the local population, but were also able to choose where to settle and received their lands as a territorial concession or iqta, a genuinely Muslim exploitation formula (it does not allow the right of property or inheritance).

Gustavo Turienzo also refers to the great linguistic and cultural influence that the Muladis had on the population. Thus, he cites, for example, the word alsitina (civil war or war between brothers), which is included in a document by Sancho the Great of Navarre and which is still used in some areas of León. He also refers to superstitions, most of them of Muladi heritage, and to the imagery that appears in some churches, which mix Koranic data assimilating them with the New Testament, such as the figure of the elephant.

CULT OF CHRISTIAN SAINTS BY THE MUSLIMS

One of the most astonishing novelties that this work will offer - “which is included in the commemoration of the 1,100 years of the Kingdom of León” - is the cult that the Muslims paid to Santiago Apóstol - “the patron of the Reconquista” - during the Kingdom of León and that, in certain cases, is still valid today.

Gustavo Turienzo highlights that the first direct Islamic mention of Santiago de Compostela dates from 948. He also adds that the sources specify the existence of Coptic and Nubian pilgrims in Santiago de Compostela at least since the beginning of the 10th century. “There is nothing unusual about this fact because not only are the first mentions of Santiago’s preaching in Spain of Byzantine origin, but the Byzantine tradition regarding the preaching of the apostle in the East is registered at least since the 8th century,” he specifies.

The Arabist explains that the origin of the Islamic cult of Santiago begins around the year 1,143. It was at this time that the ambassadors of the emir of the believers, Ali ibn Yusuf, after an audience with Queen Urraca, arrived in Santiago. “There, one of the Muslim legates began to suffer from a malignant abscess in the neck and asked a devotee to intercede for him before the apostle, bringing certain offerings in his support. The fact is that the tumor disappeared and the ambassadors recognized the power of Santiago, swearing to spread his deeds in Muslim territory,” relates Gustavo Turienzo. It is therefore very likely that due to this fact, the events of the intersection of Santiago were spread in al-Andalus and the Maghreb. Thus, the researcher assures that some Maghrebi Muslim brotherhoods founded during the 12th century continue to practice the cult of the apostle, although they assimilate it to Muslim religious practice. «In fact, traditions referring to Santiago have proliferated in the Maghreb and his presence, although distorted, has had a notable influence on certain religious customs in certain communities, more or less clandestine to the extent that they are not orthodox», he says.

Turienzo recalls, in this regard, that Almanzor himself ordered that the saint's tomb be respected when he razed the city of Santiago in 997, even placing a permanent guard in front of the tomb so that no one would violate the remains of the apostle.
