Old Great Bulgaria was a 7th-century Turkic nomadic empire formed by the Onogur-Bulgars on the western Pontic–Caspian steppe. Great Bulgaria was originally centered between the Dniester and lower Volga.

Saltovo-Mayaki is the name given by archaeologists to the early medieval culture of the Pontic steppe region roughly between the Don and the Dnieper Rivers, flourishing roughly between the years of 700 and 950. The culture was a melting pot of Onogur, Khazar, Magyar and Alan influences.

UKR135. Verkhnii Saltiv catacomb burial ground III, catacomb 11. Excavated in 1989. The chamber was oriented longitudinally in relation to the dromos, had a size of 2.4 x 1.6 m. The remains of two individuals, a man and a woman, were found on the floor. The skeletons exhibited deliberate damage, which had occurred in ancient times during a ritual neutralization of deceased people. The man (UKR135) was accompanied by the following artefacts: iron battle-hammer, an iron battle-axe, silver decorations from footwear straps, a bronze belt buckle, an iron knife, and a bronze pendant-seal. The female burial was accompanied by bronze earrings, a glass necklace, a bronze mirror, a bronze medallion, 3 bronze wire bracelets, 2 rings, a bronze toiletry case, a bronze belt buckle and a tip, silver decorations from shoe straps. Chronology according to archaeology: second half of 8th–9th c. CE.

The Black Bulgars were a nomadic people, part of the Bulgar tribes that emerged after the collapse of Great Bulgaria in the second half of the 7th century. They were the descendants of the Bulgars of Kubrat's eldest son, Batbayan. They lived in the Kuban region, and according to other estimates, in the area between the Dnieper and Don.

Verkhnii Saltiv is a historic-archaeological museum-reserve that is located near the village of Verkhnii Saltiv in Chuhuiv Raion, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine. The reserve covers one of the type sites of the Saltovo-Mayaki culture, the main archaeological culture of the Khazars, with the other type site being Mayatskoye. Findings from the Verkhnii Saltiv archaeological complex are mostly displayed in museums of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Sofia, while only a small portion of them was kept in the museum in Verkhnii Saltiv.

R-FT91192 is originally of Caucasus/Dagestani origin, which initially, on moving to the Steppe, mixed with Scythians. Later this lineage passed onto the Sarmatians (and through them to the Alans) and Bulgars.

Относительно недавно вышла научная публикация по изучению генетической истории Южного Кавказа, в которой были опубликовны результаты палео образцов с территории нынешней Грузии.

Особый интерес представляет образец, найденный в крепости Самшвилде, которая находится недалеко от села Кёсалар.

Данный образец датируется V веком н. э. и принадлежит к гаплогруппе R1a, а также является носителем около 40% восточно-евразийских аутосомных генов.

Стоит также отметить, что череп индивида обнаруживает следы искусственной деформации черепа (ИДЧ, artificial cranial deformation). Этот обычай был крайне характерен для разного рода кочевых племен (гунны, скифы, сарматы, саки и т. д.).
