There are still no samples from the strictly Slavic area. The Masłomęcz culture disappeared. In Poland, we have a single Saxon sample. Whether this is the remnant of the Goths is difficult to assess. The Balts correlate mainly with Lithuanian samples of that period. On the other hand, Slavs can be found in Hungarian samples. This is a clear trace of the expansion of the Slavs into the area of emptiness after the passage of the Huns. Slavs appear in this area, encouraged by the conquests of another steppe people - the Avars.
There are no genetic samples, but the Slavs are certainly already on the shores of the Baltic Sea. The “second wave” of migration to the south would correspond in time with Theophylact Simocatta’s account of three Sclaveni envoys from the shores of the western Ocean arriving by the Danube around the year 591.
Analysis of the following mention may indicate that the Baltic Slavs took only a symbolic part in the raids organized to the south.
Another longer12 mention of the Slavs was made as late as in
book VI, when discussing the expedition of the imperial forces
led by Maurice personally, along the Via Egnatia (the expedition
took place in August 590 or 591). The goal of the Roman army
was to pacify the areas adjacent to this significant east-west route
and to restore Roman order, which collapsed in the Balkans
during the war with Persia. The significance of the imperial
actions was military on the one hand, but the main purpose was
official propaganda. By leading a military expedition, Maurice
showed his care for the state of the empire. Securing one of the
most important military routes in the Balkans seemed an obvious
step to regain full control in the region. It should be stressed,
however, that although the Avar and Slav troops had reached
these areas, the expedition itself bore little military risk for the
emperor’s forces and the enemy presence was negligible. The
events depicted by Theophylact occurred some 50 kilometres
west of Heraclea:
The next day, three men, Sclaveni by origin, were captured by
the emperor’s hypaspists, and bore on them nothing of iron or
war machinery. They only carried kitharas and nothing else. By
asking them what their tribe was and to what “spectacles” they
were destined13 the emperor enquired about the reason why they
appeared on Roman soil. They replied that they were Sclaveni,
a tribe inhabiting the area at the end of the Western Ocean, and
Chagan, through his envoys he sent there, gave many gifts to the
tribal leaders at the gathering of men-at-arms. Despite having
accepted the gifts, they refused to ally with him, stressing the
considerable distance. They sent them, these prisoners, to Chagan
with apologies; it took them fifteen months to get there. Ignoring
the rights of envoys, Chagan denied their return. Therefore, when
they heard that the Roman people were, as rumour had it, the
most famous in terms of wealth and humanity,14 they decided to
use the opportunity and returned to Thrace. They carry kitharas
as it is not an accepted custom to put on armour. Their land
knows no iron, hence their life is peaceful and calm. They play
the lyre while not knowing the sound of war trumpets. Those who
do not know war could notice that their music is usually more
primitive. Having heard these words, the emperor, enchanted
with the tribe, honoured the arriving barbarians with hospitality.
While admiring the size and slenderness of their bodies,15 he sent
them, escorted, to Heraclea (Theoph. Sim., 6.2.10–16).

Analysis of the sample indicates that Hungary_Avar_5 is a descendant of the already known outlier from Masłomecz and post Gothic -Slavic Chernyakhiv culture. It also correlates with the Slavic colony of ViminaciumGrobalja, which we knew much earlier. Of course, as long as there are no certain Slavic samples, this can only be considered a thesis.

Hungary_Avar_5 individual correlates mainly with Polish samples, especially Silesian ones. Probably due to the important Germanic-Celtic component, inherited from contacts with the Masłomęcz group.
