Despite the Germanic component, it appears that, a lot of the time, when taking into account the results from Gedmatch kits, that Irish people are often twice as close to more Germanic populations than true 'Celtic' peoples like the French.

By this metric, the Irish are twice as close to the Northern French than the Danes. How can this be? I guess the Romans really did do a genetic job on most of the populace of France under their rule, giving them quite the southern shift!

Danes. Irish and Danes descend from a common genepool. French are further removed from that.

Closer to Danes. I'm not sure why you are saying that. Brittany and Danish are twice as close to Irish compared to next closest French group.

Could you elaborate, please, about this common genepool. Last time I checked, only a minority of French people reside close to the Mediterranean. The French are not a Southern European nation (even though, by pigmentation standards, they can appear to be, at least in comparison to the Dutch/Germans/Welsh (who are not as fair-skinned as the English/Scottish/Irish).

The common footprint of NW Europe is Single Grave/Bell Beaker (heirs of Single Grave). They are the ancestors of NW Europeans. That's why Danes and Irish are very close genetically.

The only thing that makes them different is drift that accumulated over time. This simply means that ancestors of Danes have spent a good amount of time isolated from the ancestors of Irish people. Ditto for Irish. The ancestors of Irish people have spent a good amount of time isolated from Danes.

These are small differences (including minor sources of different ancestry picked up) which sets them apart, and often hard pick to up when not using tools that are robust for such fine scale analysis.

Differences in phenotype are largely due to selective pressures that happened during their isolation from each other. This explains why Irish people are more often fairer skinned and rufous/ruddier, while Danes are blonder.
