Thirteen-year-old Laura Dekker sits in the court house of Utrecht on August 24, 2009. Dutch child protection agents urged the court today to stop Laura Dekker from pursuing her dream of becoming the youngest person ever to sail around the world solo. Born on a yacht off the New Zealand coast during a seven-year world trip by her parents, according to Dutch press, Laura plans to become the youngest ever sailor to navigate around the world in her 8.3-metre-long Hurley 800 named Guppy, financed by sponsors

THE HAGUE — Dutch child protection agents urged a court Monday to stop a 13-year-old girl from pursuing her dream of becoming the youngest person ever to sail around the world solo.

Social workers want to strip Laura Dekkers’ parents, who support their daughters plans, of parental rights and have her declared a ward of the court to stop the girl from setting sail.
"It means that her parents will temporarily lose the right to make any decisions concerning their child," court spokesman Paul van Daalen told AFP.

Laura and her father Dick Dekker were present for the hearing behind closed doors, he said.
A children’s judge in Utrecht in the central Netherlands was expected to rule this week, the spokesman said.

Born on a yacht off the New Zealand coast during a seven-year world trip by her parents, according to Dutch press, Laura plans to become the youngest ever sailor to navigate around the world in her 8.3-metre-long Hurley 800 named Guppy, financed by sponsors.
The slender, blonde girl who reportedly lives with her father on a yacht in the central Netherlands, hopes to achieve this feat in two years and continue her schooling through Internet correspondence.
"Since I was 10 years old, I’ve known that I would like to sail around the world," she has told Dutch television. "I want simply to learn about the world and to live freely."

Her father approached authorities in July for an exemption for Laura from obligatory schooling. The request was refused.
In a recent written report to parliament, education deputy minister Marja van Bijsterveldt-Vliegenthart said "a solo voyage around the world would not be in the best interests of the child".
Newspapers report that Laura got her first yacht at the age of six and spent the summer of her 11th year sailing for seven weeks on her own.
"We realize that it is a dangerous undertaking," Dick Dekker has told the Gelderlander local newspaper.

"But a court which knows nothing about Laura will decide. We would not let our child do something of which she was not in complete control."

:( I am getting sick and tired of those "social workers" - those people are our version of the intrusive STASI. They haven't been asked to intervene by parents or family have they ?

I'm currently reading another book about the 1066 invasion, and was taken aback that William the bastard was successfully campaigning in Normandy at the age of 13, and was knighted by the king of France at 15.

It puts this situation into perspective for me really. The girl was born on the high seas and has the sea in her blood; the backing and well wishes of her family, so why not let her sail her voyage into the history books?

Bloody state meddling where they need have no jurisdiction.

Nederlands zeilmeisje Laura Dekker vermist (http://www.metrotime.be/nlnewsbelga.html?telexid=45291592)

(OSN)

UTRECHT/WILLEMSTAD - Het 14-jarige zeilmeisje Laura is terecht.

Laura Dekker arrived today in Sint Maarten completing round-the-world sail voyage

Dutch teen sailor Laura Dekker just arrived 3 hours ago in Sint Maarten, thus finishing her 1-year-long trip around the globe (scroll down for photos).

Dekker who is 16-year and 4-month old became the youngest person to circumnavigate the Earth alone, but her record will not be registered as a Guiness World Record as the Book gave up this category in 2009, therefore “youngest” or “oldest” records are not applicable anymore.
Over the last miles of her world tour, Laura was accompanied by family members including her parents, sister and grandparents who followed closely in their boat while approaching Simpson Bay harbor.

The young Dutch girl, whose sailing project was suspended for a period by the justice department in the Netherlands, will turn 17 on 20 September. She had to accomplish her journey before 16 September, to overcome the unofficial record set previously by Australian Jessica Watson, who in May 2010 finished a similar sailing tour just 3 days before turning 17
Laura Dekker returned to the island of St. Martin after completing the solo sailing trip (http://www.foxcrawl.com/2012/01/21/video-laura-dekker-to-complete-around-world-sailing-record-on-saturday/) around the world in 516 days and covering a total distance of over 47,000 km.

As a comparison here, the circumference of the Earth is 24,902 miles or 40,075.017 km (equatorial) and over the poles (meridional) is 40,007.86 km or 24,860 statute miles.

Laura Dekker was harassed for years by some local paedophile. (http://www.nu.nl/binnenland/2863120/zeilmeisje-laura-jaar-lang-lastiggevallen-pedofiel.html)
