The people here familiar with me know that I am “heritage American”, or old stock white. All four of my grandparents can trace lineage back to the early 17th century colonies, including New England, New Amsterdam, Jamestown, Elizabethtown, and St Mary’s City.
I am a blend of the British colonial population in the most diverse regions of the time, including most locations from Massachusetts down to Virginia.
A while back, I created a list of my family tree’s surnames from 8 generations ago… and sorted them by old world origin, to compare to current DNA testing results
Here is what I got:
~45% English (West Country + East Anglia + Kent + London)
~30% German (Rhineland Palatinate, North Rhine–Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, Franconia and minor Switzerland)
~10% Dutch (Holland, Utrecht, Gelderland)
~10% Norwegian (Telemark)
~5% Scottish (No discernible pattern for me)
~1% Scots-Irish
~1% Irish
~1% French
There’ll be follow up posts with my DNA results for comparison.
