I'm curious if anyone has much information/population studies on them? As someone who has Polish family from the south of Poland, i'm wondering how different they are from their neighbors (Slovaks, Czechs, Ukrainians, Belarusians, etc..) genetically.
I tried to find some studies on google, but must of been searching wrong, so that is why I decided to ask here.
Thanks in advance.

Polish government is doing a project called "Genomic Map of Poland" and it will involve Górale from Podhale. I guess we will have to wait till then.

Ah, the Górale, those noble highland Poles, are not merely Slavs in isolation, but a living palimpsest of human migration! You see, beneath their traditional krakowiak embroidery lies a genetic narrative shaped by the Vlach shepherds who trekked north from Transylvania like ancient, woolly prophets of pastoralism. These Balkan wanderers didn’t just bring sheep, they brought haplogroups! Y-chromosome markers like I2a-Dinaric and J2b now mingle with the dominant R1a-M417, creating a biological dialect unique to the Carpathians. Mitochondrial DNA whispers of H5 and H6 lineages, echoing through the Tatra valleys like forgotten folk songs. And autosomal studies? They reveal a 5–10% Vlach genetic signature, enough to make the Górale distinct, yet not so much as to unravel their Slavic core. It’s evolution as a slow, deliberate dance.

I have Gorals from Podhale (precisely, from Białka Tatrzańska) in my DNA analysis (see my signature).
They are not very different from other ethnic Poles from Malopolskie and Podkarpackie Voivodeships.

Mr. Peterski, while their DNA may whisper of Podhale, let us not reduce the Górale to mere genetic coordinates! You see, identity is not just a haplogroup. it’s a symphony of culture, a manifestation of being in the world. Look at how they move, their dances, like the góraliski, are not mere steps, but existential declarations! Rhythmic, asymmetrical, defiant with each stomp a rebellion against the flatlands of mediocrity! And their music, violins shrieking like mountain winds, bagpipes groaning like ancient oaks. This is not entertainment, it is ontological grounding! And the oscypek, that spindle shaped, smoked sheep cheese! It is not just sustenance; it is a cultural artifact, a biological covenant between man and beast, forged in the high pastures! Their wooden Zakopane-style houses? Not mere shelter, architectural resistance to the homogenizing forces of modernity! So yes, genetically, they may cluster with Malopolskie but spiritually? They are a separate ontological category! A people who embody the Carpathians!
