When assessing the most environment friendly country in the world, Latvia takes the second place, outrunning countries like Norway, France, Great Britain, Sweden and the 132 country competition, losing only to Switzerland. So states the recent Yale and Columbia universities’ research of «Environmental Performance Index» (EPI) research.

While in the same universities’ «Pilot Trend Environmental Performance Index» (Trend EPI) Latvia takes the first place.

«Latvia as the second greenest country in the world – sounds great and unbelievable at the same time. We have good reasons to be proud with what we managed to achieve, which has been also noticed by the international researchers. Although we all know that we have so much more to do, so that next time this kind of recognition in environmental and long term field would not be such a surprise, but the recognition of hard work made into a regularity,» Latvian Minister of Environment and Regional development Edmunds Sprudzs.

«The most valuable resources of Latvia are – biological diversity, water and air. All this gives us a priceless environment, when compared to many other places in the world, but unfortunately resources are not limitless. They are far too valuable to be accounted for in money, but they do give an additional value to our country. This is important to remember when coming up with the development of our national economy,» Sanita Ribena, Director of the Homo ecos society stresses.

EPI is a quantitative research it follows the results of the national environment, employing the best available data. The research has been going on for a longer time, with results being published once every two years. In 2008 Latvia was on the 8th place, but in 2010 – on the 21st place.

«Latvia, which is on the second place in EPI in 2012, while in Trend EPI – on the first place among all included countries, which have invested large amounts of energy, when carrying out their environmental initiatives; for example by not using coal in energy production and actively restoring forests – and the results can be seen on http://epi.yale.edu/epi2012/rankings. Other countries listed in the top of the list have a similar story,» so says EPI project Director Angel Hsu.
