A total of 17 satellite programs are expected to come into orbit from 2012 to 2020. Over the next five years satellite contracts could amount to $2 billion, according to a space industry expert based in Turkey

The Turkish government has devised an ambitious road map for the country’s multiple satellite programs through 2020.

According to the road map, a total of 17 Turkish satellites will come into orbit from 2012 to 2020. A space industry expert based in Turkey said the next five years’ satellite contracts would amount to $2 billion. “This is a niche market with strong prospects due to Turkey’s genuine ambitions in space technology,” he said.

According to the road map, Turkey will this year launch the Göktürk II, an electro optical reconnaissance and observation satellite. Göktürk I as well as Türksat 4A, a communications satellite, will be launched in 2013. Türksat 4B will be launched in 2014 and Türksat 4R in 2015 along with the Göktürk III, a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) reconnaissance and observation satellite. 2016 will see an infrared early warning satellite sent into orbit, along with the Türksat 5A communications satellite. In 2017, Türksat 5B and a second infrared satellite will be launched. The electro optical Göktürk IV and two more infrared satellites will be put in orbit in 2018, and yet two more infrared satellites will be launched in 2019. In 2020 Turkey will launch its second SAR Göktürk V.

The road map comes after the government set up a Space Technologies Directorate under the supervision of the Transport Ministry last November. Officials said this office will later become the country’s first National Space Agency.

It seems that Turkey is rapidly advancing in economy and in general from health to techonology. Turkey is probably on it's way to be an industralized and developed nation and it has been dubbed as the rising Eurasian tiger. What also interesting as Turkey is becoming more economically powerful and developing it has shifted it's focus away from being part of the European sephere and more into the Middle East and probably wanting to become a regional player.

Turkey is well pissed off at the moment because Noble have found gas off the coast of Cyprus and Israel (a massive field) and the Greek Cypriot govt and Israel have signed an accord to sort out the maritime borders and rights to the fields leaving Turkey out in the cold because the Greek Cypriots dont really recognize the Turkish presence on the island.
This is a massive field and worth a lot of money so it will be interesting to see how things work out.

A large part of it has to do with the EU not wanting Turkey to join the union. They'll grow to regret it however. Turkey is starting to become as powerful as the Ottoman Empire during the Suleiman era. That means Turkey will become more than just a regional power but a serious world power. Turkey will probably have one of the most powerful land armies and naval forces by 2020, the date of most modernisation programs are due to finish.

Its economy is also steaming far ahead of many European countries seeing an average of +8% GDP growth every year. I think Turkey is projected to have a GDP per capita of $25,000 by 2025 up from the current GDP per capita of $11,000. If they are successful in increasing the income of Turks, they will be able to pay more in taxes and also will have a wider tax base. This means increased government revenue. They will be able to invest more into a larger and more powerful modernised military -- needed for any country seeking to become more than just a regional power. Turkey has enormous potential and they are well on their way to exploiting it.
