I got this in my email today.
We are excited to share an early update about an important change coming to Family Finder.
Beginning March 2, 2026, FamilyTreeDNA will transition Family Finder to a new targeted next-generation sequencing panel.
This update brings greater precision and consistency to autosomal DNA testing while creating new opportunities for future discoveries in genetic genealogy.
All Family Finder samples received by our lab on or after March 2, 2026 will be processed using the new panel.
What’s changing
Family Finder is moving from microarray technology to next-generation sequencing using a custom targeted enrichment panel. This new approach allows us to report more relevant genetic genealogy information with greater accuracy, while staying compatible with the results our customers already rely on.
You can expect:
More consistent and precise autosomal data
Continued compatibility with existing Family Finder results and supported transfers
A strong foundation for new reports and tools as the database grows
What’s not changing
Your existing Family Finder results remain valid
Your matches and relationships stay the same
The Family Finder experience you know and trust is not going away
Family Finder will remain the name of the test for new customers
For existing Family Finder testers
After new Family Finder tests begin running on the new panel, we plan to offer an optional Family Finder upgrade for customers who previously tested on the current panel. This upgrade will be available at a discounted price.
We will share clear details about timing and eligibility before it becomes available. There is nothing you need to do right now.
What to expect next
Our first priority is ensuring that customers receive the same trusted experience they expect today. New features and reports based on the new panel are planned for release later in 2026.
Thank you for being part of the FamilyTreeDNA community and for trusting us with your family history research.
Warm regards,
The FamilyTreeDNA Team
