I managed to merge my tree of my paternal line with my Mom's tree on Family Search. I have many more famous relatives now.

When did your most recent Scottish ancestor immigrate or settle in the US?

When did your most recent Scottish ancestor immigrate or settle in the US?

My most recent was from Northern Ireland in 1874 or 1875 but my connection to Alexander Graham Bell is through an English line that has some Scottish lines further back. The common ancestor is Sir George Leslie 4th Earl of Rothes (1485-1558).

I found out from familysearch.org that I'm a direct descendant of Oliver Cromwell. He is my 11th Great Grandfather.

Lucille Ball is my 10th Cousin 3 times removed. She descends from his sister, Frances Cromwell.

I went back to familysearch to see how I am related to the US Presidents and how many of them. I'm distantly related to 31 US Presidents including John F. Kennedy. JFK is my 12th Cousin Once Removed. I discovered that, according to FamilySearch, I have Irish ancestors too. My common ancestors with JFK were from 1500's Ireland. I am also a 12th Cousin Once Removed to his wife, Jacqueline Lee Kennedy Onassis. I thought she was all French but she wasn't - she was part English. Our common ancestors were English.



My most recent Irish ancestor was Joanna O'Carroll.

Getúlio Dornelles Vargas was a Brazilian military officer, lawyer, and politician who served as the 14th and 17th president of Brazil, from 1930 to 1945 and from 1951 until his suicide in 1954.

I have a half uncle who committed suicide on my father's side and one of my maternal grandmother's sisters committed suicide.

I went back to FamilySearch.org and made lists of the deceased US Presidents I'm related to. The total is 32 not 31.


I am related to 32 deceased US Presidents according to FamilySearch.org.

2 on my maternal grandfather's side.
29 on my maternal grandmother's side.
0 on my paternal grandfather's side.
7 on my paternal grandmother's side.


My maternal and paternal grandmothers have 6 US Presidents in common.


I am related TWICE to the following 6 US Presidents:

Ulysses S. Grant
William Henry Harrison
Franklin D. Roosevelt

If you go to familysearch.org and sign up, you can enter your family tree. They compare your tree to the trees of famous people in the activities section where there is a drop-down box that says "famous relatives". You might not match anyone if your tree isn't extensive. Many people built on parts of my family tree already. I have American lines going back into the colonial days in the 1600s.

Wikitree has a similar feature, in case anyone here is interested.

My closest presidential connections according to wikitree would be Harry Truman and Herbert Hoover, so by their account if I ever get elected president it'll be a bad omen for all of us ;)

FamilySearch gives me a different list, though. I take all of this with a grain of salt given the scarcity of surviving records from the lifetimes of many of these more distant ancestors as well as the lack of oversight on these public trees. I also have an ancestor where I'm pretty sure distant relatives have fabricated a more illustrious background for them with flimsy evidence purely for bragging rights.
