us in Romania are all Roma, that's what the name of the country comes from.
but there are Roma and even more than Romania as percentage in for example Bulgaria or Slovakia.
in numbers they're more in Romania because Romania is 20 million people country, Bulgaria and Slovakia are around 6 million.
ex-Yugo has many Roma as well, to the point that in the 80s and 90s they were stereotyped as Roma by Italians for example, before the Roma in Romania started to go in the West.
in general the Balkans have good Roma numbers all the way up to Czechoslovakia and Western Ukraine.
in Romania Roma are maybe best positioned among all these countries - when they integrate, have a job, live like any other citizen, the Roma identification stops, both from them and from Romanians. they heavily intermarry to Romanians at all social class levels. you can see them in all types of jobs like any other citizen. the image of the Roma as just a very traditional and backward person dressed in ethnic clothing is a great exaggeration, but that seems to be the image of most people outside the Balkans. my current crush is a girl of full Roma background but she has better job than me for example and is a valuable member of the community (and top level looks), like many others are. the more they're integrated the less anyone cares about their Roma background, for many it's actually something somewhat culturally interesting. that's how you see Romania isn't as racist as other places, as vast majority of people don't care about ethnic/blood/DNA origins of others, but judge them by social fitness. which anyway is sometimes exaggerated and I don't support seing people in the lower classes as bad, and I don't like the upper classes do that, but I just wanted to stress that blood origin is not THE criterion for Romanians, so the mindset is not racist.
regarding MyHeritage: my dad has Poland as group and my maternal grandma (so, the other side of the family, unrelated to dad) has Western Ukraine. so you don't have to take it that literally. if they assigned you to a group it doesn't 100% mean you descend from that, I suppose. if you're adopted you should have access to data of your parents and you can investigate a bit if you're interested. and I understand that would be important for an adopted person but also think about this: all us who know our roots and relatives and what for, I mean we will make friend with the people we like, not with our relatives. family ties are so overrated in the Balkans, people are made to live in a community, not in a clan
