Car attack on Dutch royal parade
Photographer Cynthia Boll: 'There were people lying everywhere'

<!-- END - caption --> <!-- end of the embedded player component --> <!-- END of Inline Embedded Media --> <!-- S SF -->A car has crashed into a crowd watching a parade involving Dutch Queen Beatrix and her family, killing four people and seriously injuring several others.

The car careered into a monument after narrowly missing an open-topped bus carrying the royals. No members of the royal family were hurt in the incident, in Apeldoorn, about 90km (56 miles) from Amsterdam. Dutch officials said the driver, who was seriously hurt in the crash, appeared to have acted deliberately.

<!-- E SF -->But after searching the car and his home, investigators ruled out terrorism as a motive. They have not named the man, but said he was a Dutch national aged 38. Apeldoorn mayor Fred de Graaf told a news conference that four people had been killed in the incident and 13 injured - five of them seriously.

'Bewilderment and disbelief'
Members of the royal family were shown looking on in horror as the battered car careered across the path of their bus and crashed into a stone monument.

In a televised address, Queen Beatrix called the incident shocking, and said everyone would empathise with the victims and their families and friends.

</td></tr> </tbody></table> <!-- E IIMA --> "What began as a great day has ended in a terrible tragedy that has shocked us all deeply," she said. "People who were standing close by, people who saw it happen on television, all those who lived through it, must have looked on with bewilderment and disbelief. "We're speechless that something so terrible could have happened."

Cynthia Boll, a photographer at the scene, told the BBC the car was already badly damaged before it slammed into the crowds at high speed. "There were people everywhere, you could definitely see that it was serious because everywhere was blood and shoes ripped off and all the people giving CPR," she said.

Other witnesses described people being flung into the air as the car crashed through the throngs who had turned out to see the queen.

Taken by surprise
The crowds were celebrating Queen's Day - a national holiday in the Netherlands when thousands of people take to the streets to mark the queen's official birthday. Hundreds of police officers were on duty in a huge security operation that took months to plan. But the authorities said they were taken completely by surprise when the small black car smashed through a security fence and into the crowd of people.

Following the incident, flags were lowered to half mast on government buildings across the country and all planned celebrations were called off.
Witnesses said the streets of Apeldoorn were now deserted.

How absolutely horrible! I was following the chat in the box this morning Trist, thanks for the coverage there too. :)

I feel a certain affinity to the Dutch Royals of course since one of the princesses was born here in Ottawa during WWII. How very awful that this has happened today. :(

The coverage by Dutch media was strange. On the end of the day we still don't know anything but they kept on stressing that he was indigenous Dutch and had no terror links. That's a bit peculiar since this man supposedly worked (recently sacked) as a security agent.

And, even more peculiar, several eyewitnesses saw a second person leaving the car shortly before the crash. And suddenly this person is not even being mentioned anymore ? Why ?

I would wait for more details, Trist. Eyewitnesses during the heat of an incident can see many things. I think this "passenger" isn't mentioned currently because either it was from an unreliable source or they are trying to verify the details. (I, too, saw in the news a that "possible passenger" was mentioned as exiting the vehicle.)

Interesting development and perhaps not reliable but I stumbled upon this on Geen Stijl ( (http://www.geenstijl.nl/mt/archieven/2009/04/aanslag_tijdens_koniginnnedag.html)-edit dikke doej!- | 30-04-09 | 16:11 ): LINK (http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message783268/pg9)

How many were injured, killed, maimed - only time will tell. From the video's the injuries look severe. I phoned my friend who is one of the medical examiners for the Police department and she said it's being treated as a terrorist attack on the Royal family until further notice. The driver trapped in the car is NOT Dutch - but rather is a Muslim immigrant to The Netherlands. Whether he worked alone or was in with a group is unknown at this time.
WTH ??

At Skadi there is a picture of someone in a car (I assumed it was the driver) and he looks Dutch, or at the very least European.

Let me go find it...

Driver dies after attempted attack on Dutch royal family

(CNN) -- The man suspected of trying to attack the Dutch royal family by crashing his car near their bus has died, Dutch police said Friday.

The man, whose name was not released, had been seriously injured in the crash Thursday in the town of Apeldoorn, about 45 miles east of Amsterdam, police said. He died early Friday, police said.
He had been charged with trying to attack the royal family, authorities said.

Police searched the man's house but found no weapons, explosives, "or any other clues that could lead to the involvement of other people," police said.
Five people, as well as the driver, were killed and 12 were wounded in the incident, which happened during the country's annual Queen's Day celebration, police said.
Crowds had lined the streets to see Queen Beatrix and her family ride by in an open-top bus during the Netherlands' annual holiday.

As the bus moved along, a black hatchback zoomed past it. The crowds were behind barriers off the road, but security officials and journalists, including many cameramen, were in the road as the car went by.

The car crashed into the low metal railing around a column on the side of the road. The vehicle appeared heavily damaged even before the crash, but the reason for that was unclear.
There was no one other than the driver in the car at the time, police spokeswoman Esther Naber said.

Members of the royal family saw the crash and gasped, then quickly sat down as the bus continued driving.

Queen's Day is a national holiday in the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles, and Aruba. The tradition started in 1885 and celebrates the birthday of the queen.
Although Queen Beatrix's birthday is January 31, she officially celebrates her birthday April 30, according to the Dutch government.

Queen's Day is known for its free market all over the country, where anybody is allowed to sell things in the streets. Other activities include children's games and musical performances.

The day is marked with the color orange all over the country as a reference to the colors of the royal family, who come from the House of Orange-Nassau.

I wonder if he had had an accident before he drove through the people? maybe an autopsy will show some reason for this.
