View Full Version : Favourite European Films

Europe has a long history of producing original, artistic, and diverse films. Every European country has greatly contributed to this body of work, so it would be great to see what some of our favourites are! List any European movie that you like or recently saw. Multiple country production qualify, as long as one country is part of the European Film Academy(example: French/American, German/Argentine productions).
Also, Georgian, Armenian, Turkish, and Azerbaijani films qualify according to the European Film Academy and European Convention on Cinematographic Co-Production, so no whining! Have fun and share your favourites! :D

I will just start with some recent ones I have seen.
Melancholia (2011) Denmark(and some other countries).
http://www.student-weekly.com/031011/PiX/Melancholia-Poster.jpg
These are some Swedish favourites off the top of my head.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2009)
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uMI2ooZ6cZI/S8YGccP1T2I/AAAAAAAAAFY/qB2FPKhKRE4/s1600/the-girl-with-a-dragon-tattoo-swedish-version.jpg
The Girl Who Played With Fire (2009)
http://bestthrillers.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/the-girl-who-played-with-fire-movie-poster.jpg
I have not seen the American version, but originals are always the best. I just need to see the last one The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest(2009).
One of my all-time favourite movies.
The Seventh Seal (1957) Sweden
http://images.screenrush.co.uk/r_760_x/medias/nmedia/18/63/28/67/18782384.jpg
United Kingdom has so many films to list, so I’ll start with a classic.

"Also, Georgian, Armenian, Turkish, and Azerbaijani films qualify according to the European Film Academy "
Heres an idea: make a thread with only European films, and another with only pan-european (turkish, armenian) films. Keeps everyone happy.
Other than that (minor) major annoyance, this is indeed an excellent thread idea.

A fantastically dark ending on that one:) Something you tend to see less of in American films.
I like that dark side.;)

For "Jäniksen Vuosi" (Year of the hare), it´ll be nearly impossible to find english subtitles though :( The dvd contains only finnish and swedish subtitles. Canadians made somekind of a remake of the movie with Christopher Lambert (lol, Highlander), but i doubt it´s anywhere near the original :)

No whining. This is not a thread about whether they are European countries. European Film Academy accepts those four countries for Award Nominations and shows their films at European Film festivals, so we will include them for that purpose here. Don't like it take it up with The Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

Will not watch a remake. I can probably get the grasp of what it's about without subtitles. Maybe...

Keep in mind that if you're American these movies can be little difficult to understand, since most of them are not even English or French or Italian but Eastern European and deal with harsh situations. Most of them are about the collapse of the communist regime:D But watch them and tell what you think:thumb001:

Another excellent selection...although parts of it were very disturbing to watch:cool:
I would love to see more foreign films....but one of the problems for me as a person who speaks English only is that a fair amount of a scene's original meaning tends to get lost when you are stuck reading a bunch of subtitles on the bottom of the screen. Sometimes you cannot even tell who has said what. I HATE that!!
This happens to me a lot with foreign films, and is one of the reasons I tend not to watch that many of them....much to my own chagrin:(
(I do know some German leftover from college years...but having not had a chance to use it much....the whole use it or lose it phenomena has, unfortunately, held fast)

Recently watched the movie "Trois Colouers Rouge" a movie about solidarity compassion and chance. It was ok.
My favorite films, though, are.
"Army of Shadows" a movie about the French Resistance in WW2.
Not really European but I love Andrei Tarkovsky's film.
Similar director from Hungary is Bela Tarr. Most of their movies are quite good.
Wicker Man is also a great film. Haven't watched it in a while but have two different versions of the sound track.

I haven't watched many European movies recently but some nice ones that I can remember off the top of my head are: "Innocence" by Lucile Hadzihalilovic, "Amelie", Julio Medem's "Sex and Lucia", one Turkish movie - "Issiz Adam", "Let the right one in" was also nice (I mean the Danish original not the remake)...

I haven’t seen many European films besides horror films, so this list will only be horror films. More will be French, because I speak conversational French, so I don’t have to look at the subtitles as much:
- Suspiria (Italy)
- Viy/Вий (Only horror film released in the Soviet Union)
- Them/Ils (France/Romania)
- Eyes Without A Face/Les Yeux sans Visage (France/Italy)
- Diabolique/Les Diaboliques (France)
Can’t really think of anymore tbh. I know I’ve seen more, but…
