French Perfumer Jean-Paul Guerlain on trial for 'racist' comments

Jean-Paul Guerlain, the inventor of such fragrances as Parure and Nahema, is being prosecuted for comments that he made during an interview on France 2, the state-owned television channel, in 2010.

Asked how he created Samsara, another of his perfumes, he said: "For once, I started working like a nigger. I don't know if niggers have always worked like that, but still..."

The remark sparked furious protests outside Guerlain's boutique in the Champs Elysees in Paris and calls for a boycott of the company's products.

Parfumier Jean-Paul Guerlain fined for racist TV comments

One of France's foremost parfumiers has been found guilty of making racist comments by a court in Paris.

Jean-Paul Guerlain was fined 6,000 euros ($8,000; £5,000) after the remarks were broadcast in 2010.

Asked how he created the Samsara scent, Guerlain replied using a racial slur, the French term "negre", and implied that black people were lazy.

He apologised to France's black community during the trial, describing his remarks as "imbecilic".

Guerlain, who is 75, took over the family's perfume house from his grandfather in 1959.
